Overall, I am pretty excited for this assignment as I know I will be able to focus on a topic that I am interested in and passionate about which will hopefully make it quite enjoyable. I haven’t done anything like this before so hopefully I can learn some new skills that I will be able to apply to other assignments later in the year. I am already pretty set on a topic which is making it quite hard to think of another 80 topics for my list.

Pouwels, JL et al 2020, The effect of social media on well-being differs from adolescent to adolescent, Scientific Reports, viewed 10 March 2023,
<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67727-7>

This website delves into both the benefits and the disadvantages social media can have on the well-being of an adolescent. This source was beneficial as I was able to get an unbiased view on the impacts of social media in modern day society on adolescents through various studies that were conducted. This study aimed to discover if an an increase or decrease in social media use is associated to an increase or decrease in well-being. This study determined that there was a small negative connection between using social media and life satisfaction as well increased depressive symptoms.

Houge, Mills, 2019, The effects of active social media engagement with peers on body image in young women, Science Direct, viewed 11 March 2023,

<https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S174014451730517X>

Throughout this website Science Direct conducted an experimental study to examine if social media increases body image concerns. This study included 118 female undergraduate students and these women were randomly allocated one of the two experimental conditions. After this experiment was conducted researchers were able to come to the conclusion that social media can increase body image concerns in young women. In addition to this, researchers discovered that social media creates an urge for thinness and increases body dissatisfaction among young adult women. These studies have also proven that women are more likely to use social media to view others’ photos and compare themselves with others. On the other hand, men are more likely to use social media to find and communicate with friends.

Blythe, B 2022, Twiggy: Supermodel of the 60s, Hub Pages, viewed 20 March 2023,

<https://discover.hubpages.com/entertainment/twiggy-supermodel-of-the-1960s>

This website goes through Twiggy and how young girls like the author at the time to fit into this new style. This era was almost the beginning of this disordered eating culture. As seen throughout this author was changing almost every aspect about her appearance in order to look like Twiggy. Although this website is written through a positive lens, it shows the influence celebrities have on young influential women and what they will do in order to fit into a certain style.

Not only is this advertisement also based around social media but this advertisement is also aimed at the same target audience. This video was able to accurately portray the impact that social media can have on girls from a young age.

Dove US 2021, Dove | Reverse Selfie | Have #TheSelfieTalk, video, YouTube, viewed 20 March 2023,
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2T-Rh838GA>

By using a mind map I was able to specify what I wanted to focus on in relation to eating disorders. I was able to achieve this by breaking down my main topic, eating disorders, into different subtopics and expanded my ideas from there. I was able to refine my topic to the glamorization of eating disorders in the media and the effects it can have on adolescents.

This advertisement encapsulates the negative side effects that the media can have on adolescents and how it can alter their self image.

The film starts with a variation of people from different races, ages, sizes and genders watching influencers and celebrities in the media. This is done through forms such as magazines, social media and television. After they finish viewing these people they start comparing themselves to these people that are often idolised in the media. This is done by looking at themselves in the mirror, weighing themselves ect. Once this fades out the text reads "don't fit the standard, stand out".

The target audience may have experienced similar situations currently or in the past around comparing themselves to others in the media.

I want to ensure the audience that they are not alone and that it completely normal to compare themselves to people in the media. In addition to this I want different forms of media understand and realise the harmful effects that the 'perfect body' can have on a young person's self confidence.

I will need to create content that the audience will be able to relate to and hopefully get through to the media that glamourising having the ideal body can have severe impacts. Furthermore, I will do this through displaying these harmful effects in a realistic manner.

The colours I have chosen will show the media how damaging it can be to uphold the body that is so widely publicised throughout the media.

In doing this I hope it also enables the audience to understand how detrimental an eating disorder can be to your health.
