When learning Taekwondo there is a large amount of physical increases. You will become more fit and healthy, you will be able to balance better. You will be faster because of the increased leg muscles and you will be required to perform kicks quickly and sharply. You will also have an increase in stamina because of your muscular strength. You will become more flexible since most kicks are aimed at the upper torso. But in Taekwondo there are also possibilities of injuries. The injury rate of Taekwondo is lower than other martial arts but higher than other sports such as soccer and hockey. However the more you advance the less injuries should occur. Taekwondo is also learnt as a form of self defence.

In Taekwondo the main mental effect achieved is strong self discipline. Self discipline is an important aspect in Taekwondo because it is a sport that should be taken seriously. While you can still have fun you need to know when to become serious other wise you are bound to get injured. Taekwondo also teaches students to have high self esteem and confidence in what they are doing. When learning a kick you have to do it multiple times to perfect it and by doing so cognitive function and memory increases. Learning Taekwondo gives the person the ability to set and meet SMART goals which is not only useful in Taekwondo. Going through training doing the same kicks many times raises focus and endurance. You will also learn to be more respectful to the people superior to you(coaches / teachers, parents, etc.)

Taekwondo could be a career opportunity - you could become an Olympic competitor or a Taekwondo teacher. If you do continue taking Taekwondo for a while you may travel to compete in other countries which means you can meet new people and coaches. When training for Taekwondo you are trained in teams which makes you more socially intelligent. You will also be trained not to abuse your skills (by bullying or other ways) and will may be required to spar against a team mate for feedback. You will learn to give feed back and you will gain moral development because of the diversity of the team.

There are many advantages of Taekwondo; you will be learning a form of self defence. You will become more fit because of continuous training. Taekwondo is something fun to do but you must stay committed. You will be more healthy from training often and you may be required to diet. Taekwondo can also be learned alongside other martial arts. Training in teams means more chances to make friends and become more socially intelligent. You may also get the chances to travel for competitions and train with even more people. Learning Taekwondo can also become a career - an Olympic competitor or teacher of Taekwondo.

While Taekwondo has it's advantages there are also disadvantages for example there are always chances of being injured. You may also get stiff or sore muscles after training. You may also fail grading which might not a be huge disadvantage but some people may view as one because you will have to learn the whole level again. It takes a long time to master Taekwondo or reach 9th dan. Taekwondo favours light weight people, the heavier you are the harder it is to balance yourself. You need to be flexible which may take some time to achieve (simply do a sit and reach and then decide if you need to be more flexible.) Another disadvantage would be in some dojo's where as your rank increases as does the price of each lesson. Taekwondo may not come in helpful in a ground or close range fight depending on the style taught ( ITF / WTF ).

Sub topic 7 - Is it a good idea to learn Taekwondo rather than other martial arts?

Taekwondo is the fifth most popular martial art and can be translated into Tae(foot) kown(hand) do(art / the way of). This means Taekwondo involves both arms and legs however legs are used majority of the time. Legs are used more for 'attack' and arms are used more for 'defence'. You can always learn another martial art alongside Taekwondo but you will have to be able to handle two different disciplinary systems. Height and size will also need to be thought of when deciding Taekwondo. Taekwondo takes a long time to master if you're not willing to stick it through then you shouldn't take the lessons and waste your money.

Some parents don't let their children take Taekwondo because of money or transportation. Monthly or weekly pay can be stressful towards a parent and travelling to and from lessons can take up too much time for parents each week. The pricing of uniforms and sparring gear may also be pricey and if you are to compete there is travelling on top of price. Parents may be worried about their child getting injured during training, grading or sparring. They may also be worried that the coach might harsh or degrading towards their child for what ever reason.

The tenth level of black belt was first reached in the Silla Dynasty (around 57 BC).During the Silla dynasty King Jinheung formed an elite group called Hwarang(translating to flowering knights). All the members of Hwarang were the current noblemen's sons. They were trained Taekwondo and were required to study Hwarang do which consisted of; Philosophy, poetry and history.

In Taekwondo injuries are less likely to occur than any other martial art however injuries are still more possible than sports such as soccer or hockey. The top six injuries in Taekwondo aren't the most serious but the most occurring. The top five in order is; sprains, joint dysfunctions (when there isn't enough or there is too much movement in a specific joint - such as the knee), contusions (also called bruises), laceration (a deep cut or tear in one's skin), strains and concussions.
