The Bataan Death March was the violent conclusion to the Battle of Bataan, where, after three months of hiding in the rugged terrain of Bataan, some 78,000 U.S. troops, starving, sick and tired, finally surrendered to the Japanese Imperial Army on the 9 of April of 1942 what followed next was a brutal 65 mile march from the Bataan peninsula to the Japanese prisoner of war Camp O'Donnell as one survivor recounts the Japanese tortured them they made them sit next to cool refreshing water and shot any one who tried to get any water the Japanese also shot anyone who stopped moving or collapsed on the floor out of exhaustion the Bataan death march ended 8 days later on the 17th of April the death toll of the Bataan death march ranges from 5,500 deaths to 18,650 deaths the Bataan Death march was was significant because it went on to anger Americans and caused Americans to think that the Japanese where savages it was also a victory for Japan

the Battle of the Atlantic began on September the 3 of 1939 and ended on the 8 of may of 1945 the Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continues military campaign in the entierty of World War 2 part of the reason why it lasted so long was due to the allied blockade on Germany which caused germany to sink american oil tankers and other allied ships with U-boats battle ships and airplanes eventally so many american oil tankers where sank that america started to employ a convoy system where ships travled in large groups acompined by warships this made it significantly harder for U-boats to atack the oil tankers and escape unharmed the outcome of the battle of the atlantic was the defeat of nazi germany and the axis powers the battle of the Atlantic was important beacuse if the allies had lost the Battle of the Atlantic britian would have been cut off from the over 1 million tons of imported material per week that it needed that it needed to be able to keep fighting had britian been cut off from the presicouse matrials that it needed there is a very real posiblity that Nazi germany would have been able to have caputerd britian this would have had a major afect on the war making it much harder for the us to keep fighting the war as hitler would have then prety much controled all of europe

The Battle of Coral Sea was a naval battle that took place in the Coral Sea off the coast of Australia It started on the 4th of May 1942 and ended on the 8th of May 1942 It was fought between Japan, America and Australia it was also the first naval battle where it was completely fought with aircraft carriers compared to more traditional battleships the Battle of Coral Sea began when Japan decided to invade and capture Port Moresby in New Guinea using important ships of the Japanese Combined Fleet to support the invasion when the us heard about this they sent ships of there own to counter the Japanese advance the outcome of the battle of Coral Sea for the us was the the sinking of the USS Sims and extensive damage to the Lexington and for the Japanese the sinking of the Shōhō and extensive damage to the Shōkaku the Battle of Coral Sea was a Japanese victory in the amounts of ships sunk but also a strategic victory for the allies because it was the first time that not only had a American fleet stopped a Japanese invasion they also caused them to retreat and made them scrap any potential invasion of northern Australia that they had planed the battle of Coral Sea was significant because it was a huge boost to allied troops morale and because the Japanese had been forced to retreat placing Port Moresby safely in allied hands this also eliminated any threat posed to the us-Australia supply line by Japanese that would have been there if the Japanese had captured Port Moresby the Battle of Coral Sea also had the affect of taking the Shōkaku and Zuikaku temporarily out of service making them unable to be used at the Battle of Midway which took place less than a month later

the Battle of Bloody Anzio was a battle that took place in Italy it began on the 22 of January of 1942 and ended on June the 4 of 1944 it began when allied troops made a amphibious landing in Italy known as Operation Shingle the Battle of Bloody Anzio pitied the us against Nazi Germany and Italy the plan of the Battle of Bloody Anzio was to outflank German forces at the winter line and to enable American forces to capture Rome however because much of the land that the us troops where going land at consisted of marshland sounded my mountain it was vital for us troops to quickly gather and push inland while the had the element of surprise otherwise they could face entrapment by the Nazis and Italians capturing the sounding mountains Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark knew of this potential risk however he did not pass on this information to anyone else so when Major General John P. Lucas landed with his troop in Italy instead of advancing quickly he entrenched his troops and consolidated power even though initially there was no resistance this went against the wishes of his superiors who wished that Lucas would have quickly gone to Rome and had fortified and taken a position farther inland this exposed Lucas troops to risk while placing none on the enemy the axis responded by activating there contingency plans while they waited the bulk of there troops to mobilize eventually Lucas was replaced by Lucian Truscott who was more aggressive compared to Lucas the outcome of the Battle of Bloody Anzio was the liberation of Rome

the significance of the Battle of Bloody Anzio was that it was a botched battle had General Clark not ordered the fifth and the eighth us army to Rome there was a pretty big chance that the 10th army could have been destroyed instead General Clark doomed us troops to anther year of fighting in Italy all because of General Clark ego

Eisenhower in command of Allied forces and with that the invasion was set to begin on the sixth of June a little bit after midnight 24000 allied airborne troops landed on the beaches of Normandy this was followed by the main Allied amphibious landings on the beaches of Normandy which was divided into 5 different sectors Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword strong wind also threw the landing craft east of there intended location when the men landed they did so under heavy gun fire by Nazi Germany the beaches where also covered with obstacles such as wooden stakes, metal tripods and barbed wire however the highest numbers of deaths was at Omaha because of its high cliffs however at At Gold, Juno, and Sword, some fortified towns where able to be cleared German deaths on D-Day invasion day are believed to have ranged from 4000-9000 men and allies deaths on D-Day are believed to have ranged from 4,414 - 10000+ the outcome of the event was the allies establishing beachheads on continental Europe the importance of the D-Day invasion was the establishment of the western front that led to the liberation of France and eventually to allied victory on the western front

the Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle that took place on Iwo Jima that pitted the Japanese against American forces it started on the 19 of February 1945 and ended on the 26 of March 1945 it began when Task Force 58 arrived off the coast of Iwo Jima and when troops at 08:50 am landed on the southeastern coast of Iwo Jima lead by Major Howard Connor and his 5th Marine Division which also included 6 Navajo code talkers it was believed that it would be easy to conquer the island and that the marines would face little resistance because the Japanese did not retaliate when American forces intimately landed on the island unfortunately this was not the case as the Japanese where simply waiting for the us to increase it presence on the island a little more than 1 hour later at 10:00 am Japanese forces unleashed a hellfire of machine guns, mortars, and heavy artillery onto the Americans troops many where killed and those that where able to cross where faced with 15 ft-high volcanic ash hills that didn't provide the troops secure footing or the ability to build foxholes to hide from enemy fire the Japanese also opened reinforced steel doors to be able to fire and then closed them so that the us could not retaliate and because many of the Japanese bunkers where connected by tunnels underground shortly after a bunker was cleared Japanese's troops would quickly reoccupied the bunker and fire on the unsuspecting American troops us troops where forced to invade on foot as the volcanic ash made there vehicles get stuck eventually the ash was bulldozed away to allow the vehicles to get off the beach by 11:30 am us troops had reached Airfield No. 1 which was one of there objectives and despite a frantic charge of 100 Japanese troops towards them us troops where able to stand there ground but failed to capture Airfield No. 1 in the left most part of the island American troops led by Colonel Harry B. "Harry the Horse" Liversedge where able to isolate Japanese forces to the narrowest part of the island, which was only about 800m wide on the right side of the island. Japanese fortifications caused the 25th Marine Regiment to conduct a two-pronged attack and by the first-hand account of 2nd Lieutenant Benjamin Roselle explosions where going off all over the place, and people were being launched several feet into the air Roselle later equated it to being crucified out of the 900 troops that landed on the right side of the island only 150 were able to keep fighting by nightfall the rest where either killed or injured the casualty rate was also high with a 83.3% casualty rate already on the evening of February 19th 30000 us troops had landed on Iwo Jima with 40000 more to still come the outcome of the Battle of Iwo Jima us victory and the take over of Iwo Jima by Americans but it came at a high cost with more than 26,000 us casualties and over 6,800 dead the significance of the Battle of Iwo Jima was that it better prepared and let us troops know what to expect on Okinawa Iwo Jima also served as a landing and refueling site for fighter escorts

Operation Torch was a allied invasion of northern Africa it started on the 8 of November 1942 and ended on the 16 November of 1942 Operation Torch was a compromise plan between America and Britain it allowed Britain to secure victory in northern Africa and allowed America to begin to fight back against Nazi Germany and fascist Italy on a smaller scale even though French colonies where aliened with Germany by Vichy Franc the French populations opinion was still pretty much undecided the American General Dwight D. Eisenhower decided upon a three-prong attack on Casablanca (Western), Oran (Centre) and Algiers (Eastern), and then a rapid mobilization to Tunis to catch axis forces in North Africa off guard The Western Task Force faced resistance bad whether however Casablanca was successfully captured The Centre Task Force ships got damaged when attempting to land in shallow waters Oran surrendered after a bombardment by France The Eastern Task Force faced little opposition and prompted surrender on the first day the out come of the war was that of victory the victory caused Admiral François Darlan, commander of the Vichy French forces to cut a deal with the allies to make him the French "High Commissioner" in Africa in Exchange for French forces in northern Africa to stand down and to join the allies the significance of Operation Torch was that French troops joined the allies and helped them win the war and that because of Eisenhower deal with Darlan Hitler invaded Vichy France
