Aborigines live in Australia and have art and culture. They make different weapons to help them survive like boomerangs or spears. They create fires and tell many stories using their own language. They use mud, clay and rocks to carve drawings into the rocks.

1606 the Spanish navigate the Torres straight islanders.

This time was when a Dutch explorer called Willem Janszoon landed in cape York peninsula. On October that same year, a Spanish explorer called Luis Vaz de Torres navigated the Torres Strait islands

4 June 1629 — Batavia shipwreck

The Dutch East Indiaman Batavia had a shipwreck just off Australia’s western coast. Of the two-hundred people that survived this shipwreck, only seventy would have survived three months later. Two of these people would be Australia’s first unwilling settlers

25 October 1616 the first person to set foot on Australia.

On the 25th of October 1616 Dirk Hartog became the first European to set foot on Western Australia. He was also the second person to visit Australia.

He landed on a rugged island now known as Dirk Hartog island and he left a pewter plate on it describing his journey.

6 August 1699 — attempt to circumnavigate Australia fails.

William Dampier was the first Englishman to chart some of The Australian coastline and he took a scientific study of some of the marine species and the landscapes.

He was originally going to circumnavigate the continent, but it proved too hard.

1700 — The Makasar

The makasar

From around 1700 to 1900 hundreds of fishermen sailed from Makassar in Indonesia to the Arnhem Land coast, a place they call Marege. Makasar traded with aboriginal people for sea cucumber which they traded with china.

1770 — Lieutenant James Cook Claims New South Wales

James cook claimed the east part of Australia for the British in 1770 naming it New South Wales.

Eighteen years later, the first fleet came to Australia, establishing a new colony.

1788 — First Fleet

Captain Arthur Phillip was the commander of 11 ships which was the first fleet. These ships sailed into Botany Bay in January 1788

Three days later he settled down on an area near Sydney Cove, in port Jackson. On the 26th of January he began to make a convict establishment.

1789 — The Smallpox Epidemic

Smallpox epidemic.

Smallpox has been one of the deadliest viruses ever known to man. Even though it has now been eradicated there is still debate over how it broke out in the Sydney area in April 1789

The colonists had developed some resistance from some earlier exposure to the virus. This still was Avery serious matter because of how deadly the virus is.

The aborigines were very affected by this because they had no exposure whatsoever and the amount of damage caused to them was absolutely devastating.

1803 — circumnavigation success

A British man named Matthew Flinders became the first person to circumnavigate Australia in 1803.

Flinders produced the first map that similarly represents Australia as we know it today.

Flinders also proved that Australia is a single continent.

He used the word Australia very often allowing it to come into common usage.

The castle Hill Rebellion

In March 1804 a group of Irish convicts attempted to overthrow the British rule in New South Wales and return back to Ireland. In Ireland they would be able to fight for an Irish republic.

Ending in tragedy, the rebellion resulted in 39 deaths in the battle and multiple in martial law punishments

The discovery of gold in the 1950s started a huge gold rush that changed the Australian economy forever. The first discoveries of gold were at Ophir in New South Wales. Then some was found in the Bendigo and Ballarat Creek in Victoria.

1863 islander labourers

In 1863 a small group of south sea islanders were taken to Queensland to perform labour in the cotton and sugar industries. Some of these people were kidnapped and others were misled.

1861 Melbourne Cup

On the 7th of November 1861, approximately 3500 to 4500 people gathered at Flemington Racecourse to watch a race that would become Australian history. 17 horses competed in the race, and the winner was a horse from Sydney named Archer. Archer won by an amazing 6 lengths.

1867 31st of October First royal visit

On Halloween 1867, Prince Alfred landed in Adelaide. He was the first member of the British royal family to ever visit Australia. This led to many people following him wherever he went.

This meant that it was easy to assasinate him which lead to him being shot and wounded by Henry James O’Harrel.

1945 Ten pound poms

Australia started wanting British immigrants in 1945 because They would lose in world war 3. This led to them making the 10 pound pom program, which you pay 10 pounds to travel to “Britain in the Sun”. Around 1 million people went to Australia because they wanted a holiday in the Sun. 250 thousand people went back but half went back. These people were called “boomerang poms”

1 January 1901 Federation.

On the first of January 1901, all the states of Australia formed to make federation. Federation helped many aspects of things, including transport and economy.

28 July 1914 WW1

World war 1 was a tragic event that took place after one of the heirs to the Astro-Hungarian throne was assassinated brutally. This led to a war breaking out and in total approximately 30 million people lost their lives. This war was also now as “The Great War”

1 September 1939 WWII

WWII started when Germany asked Japan to conquer Asia, when Germany would conquer Europe, and they would own almost the whole world. The war lasted a long time and eventually Germany surrendered. Japan however, didn’t. This led to being bombed by nukes. Japan finally gave up after that and announced surrender on the 15th of august. They signed a contract of surrender on the 2nd of September 1945

24th of march 1966

On this date the government got rid of the white Australia policy. This was one of the most important changes to a multicultural Australia. People were allowed to go in based on what the could to to change Australian society, not because of their race.

30th of June 1971

O this date the government made aboriginal people in the census. This was a very big step to equal rights because between 1901 to 1971 they weren’t included in the census. This was a very symbolic moment for the aboriginal people because of their long struggle to get equal rights.

16th of December 1976

On this significant date, the federal government passed a law that allowed the aboriginal community their land back. This was a law that allowed the aboriginal people, who for almost 200 years, can finally claim their land back. This was a very happy day for many aborigines because they finally had their own rights recognised.

On this day the prime minister Kevin Rudd apologised to the aboriginal people for taking their land, and taking the stolen generation.
