The decision was two things, In a five to four decision, the court believed that Scott didn't have a right to sue his owner because he was a  African American slave which meant he was not,  U.S. citizen. Also the court made it so that by Scott staying in Wisconsin he be a free man because of the Missouri Compromise and how it was unconstitutional.

There was lots of debates and in one of them Lincoln forced Douglas to publicly explain his stance on the issue of slavery.
