During the trip to Jupiter, Galileo carried a small probe, which first sampled the outer planet's atmosphere. Temperature, pressure, chemical composition, cloud characteristics, sunlight and energy internal to the planet, and lightning were measured by this small probe. Unfortunately on December 7, 1995, the small-scale probe that was brought by the spacecraft was demolished due to the severe surroundings deep within when it was moving down into the atmosphere of Jupiter.
