After his mother died, John Allan, a wealthy merchant, took Poe into his family. They then gave him the name Edgar Allan Poe. Poe and his foster family sailed to Britain in 1815. Poe studied in a school in Scotland for a short period before moving back with his family in London in 1816. In 1825, John Allan's uncle died and was very rich. He left Poe an inheritance of 750,000. Poe celebrated by buying himself a 2 story brick home. Poe later enrolled in the University of Virgina. There he got engaged with Sarah Elmira Royster. His father would gamble a lot and he lost contact with Royster. As an effect, Poe barley had any money. Unable to support himself, Poe joined the army in 1827. That same year, Poe released his first book, Tamberlane and other poems.

Poe wanted to go to west point, a military academy, and won a spot there in 1830. On October 3, 1849, Poe was found in Baltimore, on the streets. He lapsed out of consciousness but was never able to explain what happened. He died on October 7, 1849. Newspapers at the time reported that he died of brain congestion or cerebral inflammation caused by alcohol. It is still unknown what was really the cause of death.
