I started my pre-sessional course this week. I had a terrible start that I couldn't find the account to log in to the class in the first day. It made me even more nerves for the course. But my tutor Jamie told me not to worry, problems happen all the time. I was tense to had my first class on Tuesday. The atmosphere in the class helped me to relax. My classmates were friendly and we helped each other in our group work.

We have our first presentation this week. my classmates are very creative, I liked all of their work. Their English also was very good which made me stressed. My English still has a lot to improve. I saw my classmates write some comments on the work I posted on Teams, I was very happy they liked my work. I also like their work very much, but forgive me that I am not confident in my English to leave comments. But now I know that my classmates are very friendly, so I will try to leave comments next time.

I'm very happy to join this pre-sessional course in this week and I hope that after six weeks left that I can be more confident in my English, pass my exams and become friends with everyone in my class.

In 1652, the Dutch East India Company founded Cape Town in South Africa. The white descendants of these traders made up just 20% of the population, but they gained complete control of the country. In 1948, the all-white government established a segregated system that favored white people and oppressed non-white South Africans. For decades, people resisted segregation through non-violent forms of activism like marches, flag burning, memorials, boycotts, and strikes. Activists also created community-based institutions like clinics, legal resource centers, and other vital resources not provided by the racist government. There was also violent resistance. By the 1980s, the South African government was feeling pressure at home and from the international community. With support for apartheid evaporated, leaders were forced to negotiate an end to the system. A new democratic government was established in 1994.

In 1921, Argentina passed a law regulating abortion rights. With exceptions only for rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother, abortion was illegal and would lead to imprisonment. Doctors, surgeons, midwives, pharmacists, and pregnant people could be punished. For decades, activists mobilized support and held demonstrations advocating for the right to an abortion. Since 2003, activists have worn green bandanas, which has led to the color’s widespread adoption by abortion activists across Latin America. Known as “The Green Wave,” this movement contributed to the 2020 legalization of abortion in Argentina. On January 14, the president signed a law that permitted abortion during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. Green has since become a symbol for abortion rights in other countries like Columbia and the United States.

Bibliography:

https://www.humanrightscareers.com/issues/activism-101-types-examples-and-learning-opportunities/

-Art activism means using art as a means for social change, artivists can change the world. The 20th century philosopher Theodor Adorno famously wrote that “all art is an uncommitted crime”. What he meant was simply that by its very nature art challenges the status quo. Throughout history, artists have reacted against oppression, violence, injustice and inequalities. They have stood up for the voiceless and marginalised. Protest art challenges traditional boundaries, hierarchies and rules imposed by those in power. It’s an act of defiance. And it is hugely important as it can influence the thinking of the general public, as well as leaders and politicians. Often images speak louder than words. Art can make a message accessible and universal.

-For my own opinion:

Art work has strong influence and communication ability.

Ai Wei Weu is one of the most famous protest artists today. His work is deeply political and critical of China’s communist party. Whether it’s covering the floor of the Tate Modern with 150 tons of porcelain sunflower seeds or photographing himself flipping-off Mao’s mural on the walls of the Forbidden City, Ai’s work has drawn intense criticism from the Chinese state.

In 2011 he was arrested and imprisoned by the Chinese Government for 81 days. The alleged crime was ‘economic crimes’ but the artist’s family, human rights activists, and other supporters have long said his arrest was politically motivated, because of his criticism of government authoritarianism and censorship. Even after he was released, Chinese authorities retained his passport and forbid him from leaving Beijing, placing him on modified house arrest for 4 years.

Most recently, he has stood up for anti-government demonstrations in Hong Kong. He has a team filming a documentary about the Hong Kong protests on university campuses and says these protests will influence an opera he is working on. He has called out worldwide leaders’ silence in the face of these troubling times for Hong Kong.

“I believe the core value of an artist must be to express yourself freely and fight for the freedom of others” – Ai Wei Wei.

Jacob Lawrence grew up in Harlem during the Depression and he became an important commentator on the experiences and afflictions endured by African Americans. He aligned himself with the American school of social realism and Mexican muralist tradition to protest racial inequality. In his massive 60-piece painting collection called ‘The Migration Series’ he depicted the turmoil and moments of violence during the Great Migration. Sometimes referred to as the Black Migration, it was the movement of 6 million African Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1916 and 1970. The migration took place after Jim Crow threatened their lives, and equalities in the south. It stood as a powerful protest against the oppression of African American people.

Graffiti art is particularly viewed as a powerful form of social protest, and the (illegal) act of defacing can be as important as the message itself. Artist Void One has been arrested on numerous occasions for his politically-charged interventions.

He is best known for his ‘Fit for work’ campaign, which appeared at 5 job centres in the UK in 2018. It came about because his friend and mum were struggling through the Universal credit system.

“I see people suffering and their health getting worse, when it’s solvable. It’s a form of eugenics. 43% of disability claimants attempt suicide a year. I want to get that into the national conscience”, he explains.

His art protest consisted of the following: he turned the entrance to 5 job centres into murder scenes, painting the outline of a body surrounded by blood. In bright red paint ‘fit for work’ was scrawled across the job centres’ windows, walls and doors.

He was arrested for hitting the head office of the Department for Work and Pensions – with his protest artworks – at Christmas last year.

“I didn’t set out to make political art but art is a platform where I can vent my frustrations” – Void One.

This weekend we begin our study of activism. We looked at art activism and brand activism respectively.

Art activism is the use of art to make social change, and artists have reacted to inequality. The use this way to defiance. It is very important that the artwork has a strong influence and communication ability. Artists create works to express their point of view that more people can see it. Most of the time, images speak louder than words because art can make information accessible and universal.

The goal of brand activism is also to improve society or nature. Brands use their influence to show their core values to consumers. And when consumers buy the brand's goods, means that they support this brand's views. But consumers want brands to take meaningful action, not just say in the mouth, or consumers may think your brand is hypocritical.

I think activism is a kind of social activity where people organize themselves so that the government can see and change the current social phenomenon in order to achieve justice in their hearts. Make society a better place. It has played an important role in the development of society.

This includes working with Black vendors and partners, creating Barbie content featuring discussions about race and racism, and donating $250,000 to NAACP youth programs. They also curate special doll collections for events like AAPI Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month while donating to organizations that help communities “prepare for future personal, academic, and professional success”.

Like Mattel’s commitment to diversity through representation and partnerships, the LEGO Group pledged its dedication to “building a sustainable future and creating a better, brighter world for our children to inherit”. To start, LEGO designs its products to help children boost their creativity and confidence, offers coding workshops to teach children how to solve real-world sustainability issues, and creates tools to help children understand concepts like cybersecurity, online privacy, and digital footprints. LEGO also partnered with UNICEF to co-create the Digital Child Safety Policy and the ‘Child Online Safety Assessment’ tool (COSA), and launched the Emergency Relief Response Policy to “provide support for families in armed conflict and natural disaster zones”.

For their employees, LEGO’s Global and Local Employee Advocacy Groups consist of volunteers who work on internal initiatives like mentorship programs and more inclusive hiring practices. They also have a strong focus on employee advocacy and gender balance, and regularly partner with organizations like UN Women, the Business Disability Forum, and Workplace Pride to create safe working environments for everyone.

Lastly, LEGO has set multiple environmental goals for reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions. For example, they want to make all LEGO bricks from sustainable materials by 2030, and are currently developing prototypes using recycled materials like plastic bottles and renewable materials like sugarcane. They’re also working towards fully sustainable packaging by 2025, from eliminating the use of blister packs to switching from single-use plastic bags to paper bags. Finally, LEGO’s Replay program helps people donate their used LEGO bricks to schools and non-profit organizations that work with children, contributing towards their goal of zero-waste to landfill by 2025.

This is very important for my essay.

We used craap to test the reliability of the information. Craap consist of five letters that stand for Currency, Relevance, Authorty, Accuracy and Purpose. The information will be reliable if it pass these five tests.

Firstly, look at the time of upload of the article, only the information that was uploaded around five years can be selected, because the information from the past is a bit old. Next, look at the title of the article to see if it is relevant to my research. And then look at who wrote the article, to search the author and judge if it is reliable. After doing this, investigate the source of the information. It is has been verified? Finally, find that if the article has bias.

After doing this I will be able to determine that this information is reliable and can be used for my research investigation.

Day 2 Artist research: Jenny Kendler

Today I continue to work on my final paper. In yesterday's presentation, I chose two artists' works as examples to study. Today, I am going to do more research of the artists.

The first artist I chose was Jenny Kendler(b.1980, New York City). She is an interdisciplinary artist, environmental activist, naturalist & wild forager who lives in Chicago and various forests. Kendler is a 2023 Artadia Awardee. Since 2014, she has been the first artist in Residence of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). She serves on the board of Directors of Artist-in-Residence ACRE and on the fundraising Committee of the Board of Directors of 350.org, an international climate change organization. She is also a founding member of Artists Commit, an artist-led initiative to foster climate awareness in the arts community.

Her work has been exhibited in several museums and biennials, and her work has been included in more than 70 group exhibitions.

The work I chose names birds watching. It is a 40-foot sculpture consisting of a "swarm" of 100 reflective bird's eyes mounted on aluminum. It was originally created for Storm King's exhibition Indicators: Artists of Climate Change. Each eye belongs to a species of bird considered threatened or endangered by climate change. With many others watching, this work requires us to consider our own responsibility for the myriad impacts of climate change on other living things.

In this spirit, birds watching reminds us that true sight is an act of reciprocity. Mass media images and the omnipresence of screens shift our visual consciousness toward one-way consumption, leading us to a sense of distance from the world. When we get caught up in this limited, non-participatory vision, what we see often confirms our biases and stereotypes, flattening other creatures like birds into "things."

When our visual behavior is reciprocated by another creature, this mutual gaze allows us to actively participate in our vibrant biosphere. Relearning our ability to observe nature in depth enables us to engage in inclusive, participatory acts of life, reweaving our entanglements with the rest of nature.

We cannot be mere bystanders in this Anthropocene era, when our compassion, or lack thereof, for other life has become an ecological force in itself. Truly seeing can be the first step in practicing a new spirit of mutualism and caring.

Birds watching reminds us that when we see nature, nature looks back.

Compare and contrast Edward Hopper's work with mine

Today we learned a new technique of how to compare and contrast essay. Jamie showed us a painting in class by Edward Hopper（1882, Nyack） called nighthawks（1942）. In the group discussion, we discussed our views about this work and Jamie asked us to compare this work with our own work. I chose a photograph with night view of my hometown street to compare and contrast with nighthawks.

In both of these two works, there are streets at night. However, the difference is that there are a lot of people walking in the street in my work, while there are no people in the street in Edward Hopper's work. It's a extreme contrast. On the other hand, the street in my work there are lights everywhere, on the contrary, Edward Hopper's street has only one store with lights on. In both of our works there is a man and a woman holding hands. But I can't judge the relationship of them from his work, they can be strangers, lovers or other relationships. But I can almost confirm that the two people in my work are lovers, because the man carries the woman's bag. His paintings depict the bitterness and loneliness of modern city life, while mine depict the lively night life of the city. I really like the color contrast in Edward's work, can make us pay more attention in the cafe and shows that the artist has great painting skills. Although that I do not really understand the meaning of this work, I still really like it.

Bibliograghy:

Edward Hopper (2023) Wikipedia.

In the weekend task I was working on a video about two public art in the city where I live. When I received this task that the first artwork came to my mind is the 100 marathon runner's status in Huan Dao Roud. I think my city has some public artwork. It's not too much, but still have some. But most of people in my city will not realize that is an artwork, just think it just a decoration and does not mean anything. The artwork that I research is more about commemorating and decrating for me. The main reason why there do not as much activist art in China as in the UK is because of the cultural is differences. There does not have a lot of activism in our country since ancient times and we don't know much about the art activism. So that most people in china do not going to choose the activist art to protest.

In today’s lesson, we learned some new presentation skills focus on voice and body language.

At first, Jamie showed us a presentation in TED with no sound and let us watch his body language and other techniques. I saw the speaker use rich body language, his speech combined with some slides and data. After that Jamie asked us to guess what was he talking about. I thought that it would teach me something. But when Jamie put the voice out, I realized it was about nothing. But he uses body language, facial expressions and some slide data to make us think he's having a presentation.

It was useful to learn the skills in the presentation he did. One of the important skills is the body language, it can help work off nervousness and convey the massage. In the same way, voice also is a big problem in the presentation task. Focus on tone which is how your voice rises and falls. And do not memorise and read the word because that makes your voice tend to be flat.

I learned a lot from this lesson. So when the next time I do the presentation, I will use these skills to make it show better.

Mock presentation test

We had a mock presentation test in today's class. I presented my design on a Self-Conscious problem. Before this times, it took me nearly ten minutes for every time I practiced my speech. To my surprise, I only spent seven minutes in today's speech. But it also caused me to speak too fast and not have a good rhythm. And seven minutes is still too long, I need to cut out some part to my final design. Also, I didn't put the image referencing next to the picture, which is something I need to change. But overall I am very satisfied with my practice exam today, I think it is better than every time I have practiced before.

In today's class, I also saw many students' good speeches, very suitable rhythm, very exquisite illustrations, which are good examples for me. Before the final exam, I will modify my shortcomings, practice more, and make progress.
