Least Listened to Genre

While listening to music I find myself least likely to click on a pop song and jam out it. The pop genre usually consists of songs that are supposed to make you "feel good" and dance around, and I guess that is why I'm not attracted to it. I love listening to music that has more meaning to it than just a catchy rhythm or melody or lyrics that hold no substance. In today's society with all the bad going on I think more people turn to the pop genre to experience that "feel good" effect and forget about all the things they're worried about.

Poor Pop Song = Swish Swish

Several artists come to mind when I start to think about the pop genre, the main on being Katy Perry. Perry's career is mainly based on songs that rely on their catchy pointless lyrics and rhythm as well as the melody. An example being the song "Swish Swish", after analyzing the lyrics I realized they actually don't make any sense at all. "They know what is what
But they don't know what is what
They just strut
What the f***?

A tiger
Don't lose no sleep
Don't need opinions
From a shellfish or a sheep
Don't you come for me
No, not today
You're calculated
I got your number
'Cause you're a joker
And I'm a courtside killer queen
And you will kiss the ring
You best believe"

"Pop music, disco music and heavy metal music is about shutting out the tensions of life, putting it away."
Peter Tork does a good job explaining how Pop music is used in today's society to help people forget about the things that are worrying them.

James Surowiecki on Pop Music

"Pop music thrives on repetition. You know a song's a hit when you've heard it so often that you'll be happy never hear it again."
Surowiecki's explanation on why Pop music is successful has to do with the use repetition. But the use of repetition is also Pop music's downfall because after awhile the use of the same words over and over again gets very tiring.

My second Media Report focuses on the genre I listen to least, the Pop genre. My main focus on this Media Report was the artist Taylor Swift and one of her new songs "Look What You Made Me Do". This song in particular actually has meaning but not a very good one. Swift uses this song to slander various artist in the music industry such as Kanye West and Katy Perry that she has had conflict with. The song itself uses repetition to draw attention to itself and has a catchy rhythm.

After analyzing various pieces of music for this Padlet I have come to the conclusion that I in fact do not enjoy the Pop Music genre for the following reasons.
The pop genre fails to provide songs with meaning that can be applied to day to day life. All the lyrics are filled with nonsense and repetition.
Another reason I don't enjoy the Pop genre has to do with the use of auto tune on the voices of the artists that usually contribute to this genre. As well as the use of computerized instruments, while listening to music I prefer to hear instruments that have been stripped down or in their natural state.
The feel good Pop genre is not for me, I'll stick to what I know.

I feel that this picture accurately depicts the Pop genre since Pop songs typically just pop right into your head with their catchy repetition. I think this is actually what listening to a Pop song looks like, everything in your head just pops away!

This picture depicts the very definition of what Pop music is, feel good. Pop music essentially is a party, once you plug in and listen to it you just find yourself dancing and singing along to the music because of how catchy it is.
