A Cathedral Ceiling is vaulted and has an open air design, but is given it's name because it originated in cathedrals where the goal was to make the ceiling as high as they could to reach the heavens.

Coffered Ceiling

A coffered ceiling is going to have indented spaces to help absorb the sound and give the ceiling a decorative look.

Coved Ceiling

A coved ceiling is going to have a sloped line from the wall to the ceiling. It will not be a harsh line, it is a smooth line.

Dropped Ceiling

A dropped ceiling is going to be put in "under" an existing ceiling. This can be so that utilities can be run between the dropped ceiling and the regular ceiling or to create better a better environment.

Domed Ceiling

A domed ceiling it going to arch up towards the sky. Because they are so large they are not often found in residential home and are more commonly found in stately manors or government buildings to give them that grandeur effect.

Shed Ceiling

A shed ceiling is going to be like a vaulted ceiling in that it creates a higher ceiling line. A shed ceiling gets its name from the lean-to sheds that are added onto taller buildings.

Tray Ceiling

Imagine a serving tray. Now turn it upside down and put it on the ceiling, that is a tray ceiling. It goes up into the ceiling space and normally has crown molding that enhances the lines.

Vaulted Ceiling

A vaulted ceiling vaults, or goes up, into the ceiling. Vaulted ceilings are found in residential homes where the designer is trying to create more open sight lines and make the space look bigger than it is.
