There's a variety of things that bring people true happiness, such as having positive thinking and mind set. Evidence shows that people who are more grateful and sanguine are happier and less stressed than those who are not. Another big thing that causes happiness is being actively involved in some sort of activity that is suited to your skills, something that you enjoy doing but still challenging to a certain extent. This state is called "The Flow". People who experience the Flow on a regular basis are proven to develop more positive traits, self esteem, and increased concentration.

Gatsby and Daisy both had different ways of achieving their own version of the American Dream. Gatsby was pursuing happiness by trying to win Daisy's affection by throwing parties.

Gatsby didn't do a very good job at achieving his happiness. The artificial parties didn't do the trick. The only thing Daisy wanted was money, and Gatsby provided, but he didn't try to win her heart. The fact that they knew each other 5 years prior to the story could've been a good foundation for something special, but since Daisy was satisfied with Tom, Gatsby didn't have much of a chance anyways, and he didn't see that.

If you suddenly obtain lots of money, try to avoid being like Gatsby. Material objects like fancy parties or diamond rings don't always do the trick at winning the hearts of your partner. Daisy didn't even show up to Gatsby's funeral, and that shows that he didn't mean much to her, only the things he bought.

When winning a large windfall of money at once people tend to lose sight of what really makes them happy. Ways to avoid this from happening is to set a small limit on how much you'll spend in each months time and don't go over that limit so you don't spend all your money at once and end up going broke. Most importantly keep doing things that you enjoy, some of the things you might've done before obtaining this money.
