A theme that Myers emphasized was the unnecessary deaths of war. In the incident of Lieutenant Carroll's death, Perry was questioning himself about the war asking "Why did he have to die"(130). In order for Myers to demonstrate the devastation of war and how surreal it is people die, Myers needed to express the soldiers mournfulness. However what else could Myers do to challenge the readers thoughts on the war.

1.) Claim-In Fallen Angels the effects of the war highlight the long lasting psychological trauma that comes with war.

2.) Support-The poor physical and mental state of soldiers minds is caused by all the death violence and also the lack of support contributes to the deterioration of their mental health. The book focuses on the soldiers trying to overcome their internal issues and dealing with the trauma that follows their time in the war.

3.) Question-What will the long term affects of their trauma look like, how will they deal with it in the future.

Claim - Soldiers in war are not allowed to think about what they have experienced and have to remain numb to keep going.

Support - There are many points in the story where the trauma the soldiers have experienced threatens to come back and haunt them, but they force themselves to keep going. While Perry is on patrol and simply waiting for something to happen, he specifically shares his struggle to find something to think about while all they can do is wait for danger to come to them. "I tried to think of something to think about. I didn't want to think about Mama. If I thought about her I would get too involved" (160-161). He would lose himself in his head if he dwelt on his fears for too long.

Question - What happens to the soldiers that let their trauma and fears take over?
