In the 1600's when witchcraft was an extreme thing to be scared about, King James I had an interest in the subject. In his book "Daemonologie", his interest is seen. Shakespeare is said to have incorporated witchcraft as a way to be favoured by the new king.

In Shakespeare's time, many things that we have common explanations for now were often seen as witchcraft back then. Without the use of science, the only logical explanation for certain things was magic. It's unsure how Shakespeare felt about witchcraft, but it's believed that within the play he wanted the witches to represent real witches or evil in the human form.

Witches were thought to be connected to the devil, and back then that was very scary considering many people believed in the Catholic religion. The devil is seen as dark and bad in that religion, so anyone incorporated with the devil was bad. Witches were said to carry out all the plans of the devil, but on top of that could fly, turn into animals, and simply disappear. They could make people insane, predict the future, as well as change the minds of people, which is shown in Macbeth.

The word witchcraft is derived from the Old English word "Wiccecraeft". Wicca and wicce for female and male, pronounced as "witch-uh". Craeft meaning craft or skill, and the two words being put together is how the term became. The witches being the people who do the crafts/have the skills.
