The Transtheoretical model is a theory in which individuals change their behaviors through a series of stages such as: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The concept I chose was preparation because it shows an individual taking the steps to take action in the next 30 days and has taken a few behavioral steps throughout that allotted time period. The image above represents preparation because it shows someone creating a diet plan for their main goal, which is to lose weight, so the individual is researching and creating different diet plans that ensure success with their ultimate goal.

The Diffusion of Innovation Theory is a theory that explains how new practices, products, and beliefs can be adopted or spread around in a community, organization, society, or culture. The concept in the Diffusion of Innovation Theory I selected is Innovation, which can be described as a product, idea, or practice that was created or thought of by an individual, organization, or community that is seen as brand new and/or improved. A picture I found to be an example of the concept innovation is a picture of old to newer iPhones, as it perfectly represents how new ideas, upgrades to a new object, and newer practices are occurring each year from an organization known as Apple to create a brand new product such as iPhones with newer improved phones and built-in features that can affect an individual or community.

One of the definitions of diffusion of innovation theory in the reading is "the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among members of a social system" stated by E.M. Rogers. The concept I chose from this theory is communication channels which is defined as the communication of a new idea from one person to another. The picture I chose for this is individuals reposting something on social media for others to see. I chose this photo because this demonstrates communication channels very well as it allows the communication of a new idea from one person to another on the internet.

After reading Theory at a Glance, there are couple different concepts of Diffusion of Innovation theory the concept I want to discuss is innovation. In the book it is stated that the concept of innovation is " An idea, object, or practice that is thought to be new by an individual, organization, or community" (National Institute of Health, 2005, p.22). So that is why I chose an individual switching from a gas car to a EV because for this individual who is doing the switching it is a lifestyle change for them and the individual who is doing the switch would be considered a new thought for them. There can be many reasons why they wanted to do the switch like they realized that EV's are better for the environment, they won't be spending money on gas, their friends have also done the switch etc. So this individual adopted this new thought of owning a EV.

Social Cognitive Theory is a theory where individuals learn different behaviors depending on personal factors, environmental factors, and human interaction. Factors that may help an individual would be self-efficacy, goals, and outcome expectations. This is important because if people feel they have control over their behaviors, they are more than likely to take on the challenge to change or adjust a behavior. An example is my internship as a Behavior Technician, where I would model or demonstrate activities for children. If an action is done correctly, they receive positive reinforcement such as a high-five or reward. If not, they will be guided in the correct direction, appropriately, to complete a task. As children see these observations, they can imitate and adjust behaviors based on personal motivation, social cues, and various reinforcements.

The concept from the health belief model that I have chosen to address is perceived severity. I find that the image I included above, comparing smoker’s lungs to normal lungs, emphasizes the severity of smoking and its impact on the human body. The image clearly shows that smoking damages the lungs, emphasizing that it causes severe health problems. For an individual who may know smoking is bad but does not understand how bad, I think this image directly illustrates the severity of the habit. This is a major component of the health belief model because an individual is unlikely to quit a habit if they do not find it to be destructive. Since this image adequately illustrates its negative impact, it’s likely that it will appropriately link to the next steps of the health behavior model to stimulate behavior change.

This week's reading introduces the Precaution Adoption Process Model (PAPM) that includes 7 stages of being unaware of the issue, unengaged, decision about acting, may decide not to act, or may decide to act, stages of action, and maintenance. The concept from the theory I decided to focus on is the first stage of when an individual is not aware of the issue and undecided on what action to take. The illustration above shows a woman posing for a photo in a suggestive manner with her smartphone. She does not know that digital footprints are a danger, therefore unaware of the issue (stage 1). While her parents have warned her not to talk to strangers online or put herself in an unsafe situation, she assumes taking these photos with her face covered will prevent her from being exposed. As a result, she is unengaged (stage 2) with the situation.

The Theory of Planned Behavior examines the connection between behavior, beliefs, attitudes, and intentions. It states that the behavioral intention is the primary determinant of behavior. According to this model, a person's intention to engage in a behavior is shaped by their attitude toward the behavior and their perception of whether important others approve or disapprove (subjective norm). Individuals may apply greater effort toward performing a behavior if they perceive they have a high level of control over it. The example I chose is women deciding on whether or not to get a pap test. This example directly applies to the Theory of Planned Behavior because it demonstrates how intention influences behavior-specifically the decision to seek a pap test. According to TPB, behavioral intention is the strongest predictor of whether someone will engage in a behavior. By identifying which belief and attitudes most influence intention, this insight will help tailor campaigns to address barriers and help motivate more women to seek out pap tests.

The Social Ecological Model views health behaviors as influenced by multiple, interconnected levels of factors, including individual characteristics, interpersonal relationships, organizational contexts, community dynamics, and societal policies. The example I chose for this model is encouraging family and friends to cook healthy meals together, which falls under the interpersonal level. The interpersonal level helps health outcomes when done the right way. When families get together and cook, it creates a special social bond and strengthens family dynamics by bringing them closer while also promoting healthier habits. Additionally, it offers a learning opportunity for families to discover how to cook healthier meals and understand the importance of doing so. This practice can also help establish good habits around cooking and spending quality family time, which, hopefully, will continue to grow.

Community which is one of the many levels in the social ecological model is defined as when a community comes together as a group of people to support one another in promoting and improving health within the community. The example picture I chose is there are staff from health clinics coming to communities to provide and give support to those who are in need of a health screening. It also seems like a health fair where they are there to educate the community on how to improve on their health and what is needed to be done to keep the community healthy and safe along with giving free health services as some people may not have the money to go to an actual doctor. Not only does this bring a community together but it also offers help to those who really need it and don't have the resources needed.

The social ecological model outlines what affects a person’s relationship with their environment. There are three levels to this process: interpersonal, intrapersonal, and community. Interpersonal is a person’s relationship with others, intrapersonal is their relationship with themselves, and community is rules and regulations at the social and state level. I chose the intrapersonal level because a person's behavior and attitude can affect how well they can get along with others as well as how well they adhere to policy. Ensuring that people have a positive relationship with themself and the knowledge to make informed health decisions can improve their quality of life. The photo above adheres to this because spending time getting to know oneself is just as important as spending time with others, and will likely benefit a person's ability to connect with those around them.

Providing free CPR classes within a community benefits individuals by equipping them with life-saving skills to create a safer environment by increasing the number of people who can respond effectively in emergencies. Since the class is free, it removes financial barriers, allowing more people regardless of income to gain critical skills that could save lives. By fostering a culture of preparedness, the community as a whole becomes more resilient to medical crises

Hypothetically the man may smoke daily around his pet, unaware that the second hand smoke is harmful for not just the people around him, but also animals, such as his pet dog (Stage 1: Unaware). The man may understand that the act of smoking is harmful to his own personal health, but may not understand that second hand smoke can be just as harmful to any living thing around him. Although the man may become aware of the harm to his pet, he may continue to smoke at home for a time since his dog seems to be fine (Stage 2: unengaged). When the mans dog starts to experience symptoms of second hand smoking, the man may decide that he needs to smoke elsewhere or quit altogether (Stage 4/5: Deciding about acting or deciding to act). The man chooses to quit for his health and his dogs health and plans to wean off of smoking so that he and his dog may live a long healthy life (Stage 6/7: Acting & Maintenance).

The Theory of Planned Behavior is a psychological model that attempts to predict human behavior towards an action by examining the influence of their beliefs, attitudes, and intentions. The Theory of Planned Behavior states that a person’s likelihood towards performing an action is mainly influenced by their attitude whilst performing it, and by their belief about other individuals who are important to that person on whether they approve or disapprove of that behavior. With this in mind, I’ve chosen a cartoon picture of a group of people smiling whilst exercising. This demonstrates the Theory of Planned Behavior as it 1) highlights the positive attitude that the individuals in the picture have towards exercising, thereby becoming more likely to engage in regular physical activity, and 2) depicts a group setting that signifies social approval and support, which in turn suggests that individuals perceive exercising by their peers as an important and enjoyable activity. If the image instead depicted a group of individuals exercising whilst frowning and being generally unhappy, according to the Theory of Planned Behavior, that instead would signify that they view exercising in a negative attitude, and likely don’t believe that their social circle approves or supports such behavior, thereby resulting in a decrease in intention to exercise regularly.

Regarding the Social Ecological Model, there are five levels of influence which are: intrapersonal factors, interpersonal factors, institutional/organizational factors, community factors, and public policy factors. Focusing on interpersonal factors, we learned from the reading that this includes family, friends, and peers which can provide a social identity, support, and social norms. If it is a norm in a friend group to be active, an individual who does not typically work out may choose to join them at the gym. In addition, the friends can provide support in an individual's choice to lead a healthier lifestyle. If someone's friends believe that working out is important, it is more likely that the individual will begin to share that belief. This can cause change in one's life to make better choices and become more active.

The third stage of the Precaution Adoption Process Model is deciding about acting. When deciding about acting, the once unaware individual now becomes known about the hazard they are being exposed to but they still need to think about whether or not it is serious enough to them if they should make changes. The scenario above describes the hazards of STI due to unsafe sex. The individual is now aware of the hazard but is making the decision on whether or not they want to act. The outcomes usually end up in one of two ways. The first way is that the individual could decide not to act and the process repeats. Choosing to not use condoms can keep increasing the risk of serious STIs. The second outcome is that the individual does decide to act which would then lead to the continuation of steps 6-7 which is acting and maintaining. Using condoms or female condoms can protect against STIs and it can only keep protecting you if you continue to use them each time you have sex.

It shows that social support can encourage healthy habits and reduce risky ones. Positive relationships help people make better decisions by providing guidance, motivation, and accountability. I chose this concept and picture because it shows how people around me can influence my choices. In this picture, I see a group of people engaged in a discussion about vaping prevention. It reminds me that having supportive peers and mentors can help me make healthier decisions. I am more likely to avoid harmful habits when positive influences surround me. This image reflects real-life situations where I learn from others, and they learn from me. It shows that change doesn’t happen alone but through the people I interact with daily.

Perceived barriers are the things that make it hard for people to take care of their health. These can include high medical costs, long wait times, fear of treatment, or trouble getting healthcare. The picture I picked shows someone struggling to pay a medical bill. I chose this image because it shows how these problems stop people from getting the care they need. Even if healthcare is available, people may avoid it if they think it’s too expensive, scary, or hard to get. This connects to the HBM because it helps explain why some people don’t take steps to stay healthy.

The Social Ecological model consists of five concepts that are paramount to examine how peoples’ health and behavior is influenced through various factors: intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy, which are all interwoven with each other. As opposed to just looking at individual factors that drive certain behaviors, this framework takes into account other levels that have a greater capacity to influence health outcomes. The picture that I provided alludes to the institutional (organizational) level. The institutional level includes rules, policies, regulations that may restrict or promote certain behaviors. My picture conveys healthy eating at schools; portraying that not only are the kids being involved to preparing healthy foods, but it also shows healthy eating behaviors by swapping out unhealthy foods for nutritious ingredients. Having policies such as having healthy food options at schools to promote nutritious eating behaviors is an example of institution level influence. I chose hthis model because it reminded me when I was in elementary school and Michelle Obama instated a health policy for schools to have healthier food. Although this healthy policy is also public level influence, I also thought it could be institutional as schools integrate healthy eating with providing nutritious food options. At the time, I was disappointed because they got rid of the good, junk food. But I then realized that was doing what would benefit the health of children and young adults.

These help spread awareness.

Interpersonal Channels – Conversations with friends, family, or professionals. These help persuade people to adopt an innovation because they involve trust.

An example I thought of was how COVID-19 vaccine campaigns used mass media (news, ads, social media) to inform people and interpersonal channels (doctors, family discussions) to encourage vaccination. The image I shared represents interpersonal communication channel in the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The doctor is directly communicating with a patient, likely explaining a medical treatment, new health practice, or vaccine information. Healthcare professionals, like doctors, often serve as trusted sources of information, helping patients understand, accept, and adopt health innovations (ex: vaccines, screenings, or lifestyle changes). This type of communication is more persuasive than mass media because it allows for questions, clarification, and personalized advice.

The bottle features unique characteristics such as innovative lid design, improved insulation, and sustainable materials that set it apart from existing water bottles over the years.

Self-Efficacy is how you believe in yourself to be able to change. In the image, the cat sees itself as a tiger insinuating that it sees itself as bigger and tougher. I chose this image as it represents the image to believe in yourself, and have the confidence to take action. A person can only change when they believe they can change, and nothing changes if nothing changes. For example, people sometimes participate in unhealthy habits due to mental health concerns and difficulties with self image. Someone drinking is not going to stop drinking unless they see the worth in themselves and the ability in themselves to change. Self-efficacy reminds us how important mental health is. Health professionals have to connect with individuals on a personal level with empathy, support, and positivity to help increase the individual's self image to make a change.

The concept within Social Cognitive Theory that I have chosen to address is self-efficacy. When someone is confident in their ability to take action or overcome obstacles, they have high self-efficacy and are more likely to be successful in their health behavior change. Self-efficacy is about taking smaller steps to reach a larger goal one is working toward. The picture I have chosen is an example of self-efficacy because the girl in the drawing believes she is capable of doing well using her textbook (“I’ve got this.”) in order to be successful in her exams and academic career.

In the “Health Belief Model”, the factor that I have decided to highlight is perceived susceptibility. This refers to the views a person has about the likelihood of suffering from a health problem or health condition. I feel that the image I chose does a good job of combatting low perceived susceptibility by including a picture of a child whose mother is applying sunscreen to her face. In this example, a viewer of the advertisement may be surprised that the child is wearing sunscreen because she is young and probably has not spent enough time in the sun to be at risk of skin cancer. Further, viewers may assume that people of darker complexions do not need sunscreen, but only those who are of lighter skin tones require the use of sunscreen. However, people of all ages and colors may experience damage to their skin from harmful UV rays and develop skin cancer in their lifetime. This points to why the ad must target preventative sunscreen use starting at a young age. Perceived susceptibility is an important factor in kickstarting change in an individual’s health behaviors and I feel that this image is a great reminder that everyone, especially young people, need to protect their skin.

One of the steps in the Transtheoretical Model is maintenance. The maintenance stage of the Transtheoretical Model emphasizes sustaining positive behavior changes and preventing relapse. One effective strategy during this stage is seeking support, which can involve participating in support groups, consulting with counselors, or engaging with supportive communities. I chose this picture because I believe one effective way to maintain a positive practice is to gather support from friends or family and including them in your routine. In one personal example, I challenged myself to jog for at least 10 minutes, 3 days a week, every week, for 10 weeks. I realized it was really difficult doing it alone, so I enlisted a couple of friends who agreed to jog with me and hold me accountable for the days that I felt discouraged. It truly helped me stay focused and achieve my goal.

The social ecological model explains how individuals and their environment connect to shape health and behavior through physical, social, and political factors. It highlights five levels of influence: individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy. People can influence their surroundings as well as be impacted by them. Behavioral influences come from individual, relational, community, and societal relationships, shaped by personal traits, social relationships, organizations, and policies. The image of a community eating nutritious vegetables stood out to me because this image highlights the support that communities are giving to children, encouraging healthy eating. Access to healthy food is sometimes a struggle for many families, community programs offering children healthy snacks can promote nutrition and encourage healthier eating lifestyles. I strongly relate to this image because, at a local park near my house, free healthy snacks are given to kids between certain hours of the day. These programs and communities offering these accessible snacks allow children to make healthy choices and foster support in leading wellness.

Social cognitive theory is the theory that peoples behaviors are learned through watching others, being influenced, and the environment around them. For my example photo of social cognitive theory, I chose a screenshot of a TikTok where a affordable nighttime skin routine is suggested. This is just one example of the many things that social media influence people to do. Social media is a way for people to learn behaviors and be influenced to change their behavior.

I have chosen to highlight Perceived Benefits, one of the concepts of the Health Belief Model. Perceived Benefits can be viewed as an advised action that can reduce the risk. I chose individuals exercising, as being active on a day-to-day basis is a great way to help reduce the likelihood of developing diseases. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are currently some of the leading causes of death. Activity levels are highly interrelated with the two, and being frequently active helps a person both physically and mentally reducing the prevalence of diseases such as those.

As we learned about the precaution adoption process model there are many stages that can be related to the covid-19 vaccine. At the beginning everyone was unaware of the issue and was not fully informed of the situation. Since we were not familiar with this new unknown virus we navigated by the first two stages unnoticed. However during stage 3 we get to the point in which we have an idea of what is happening and we can decide to either move onto the next stage and take action or not. This could happen by getting diagnosed or simply by following the recommendations given by healthcare providers or authorities during this time.

My concept on Diffusion of Innovation Theory is on Social System which refers to a group of individuals who together adopt the innovation. The photo I chose relates to remote learning, during COVID as a society remote learning had to be adopted for the majority of students around the US and the world. This is something that was completely new to students and teachers, we all had to adapt to this new way of learning and teaching. For many this new concept was easy to adapt to but for others it was new and different and had to some difficulty adjusting.

The diffusion of innovations theory as described in the text, is the idea of how "new ideas, products, and social practices spread within an organization, community, or society, or from one society to another." I chose the concept time which is how long it will take for someone or a group of people to adopt the innovation. The image I chose shows two elderly women trying to navigate an iphone. The older generation grew up on different innovations that the younger generation did not such as a flip phone or a pager. The idea of a smartphone might be hard to grasp and even harder to learn. This population might need more time to adjust to these newer innovations but they will eventually adapt and be capable of using a smart phone. On the other hand, the younger population will need less time and might adapt to these innovations right away as this type of cell phone is all they know.

The diffusion of innovation explains explains, "how new ideas, products, and social practices spread within a community, society, or even between societies" (17).The development of movie-watching habits is one area where innovation is visible. Early filmmakers started out making silent movies before moving on to sound-assisted ones. New viewing techniques, like DVDs and streaming services, appeared as technology developed long before they were widely used. Early adopters of these technologies include those who began utilizing services like Netflix and Hulu when they were still in their early stages. Others waited for streaming to become popular. In more recent years, people have become more open to high-end entertainment options like IMAX, and many now favor the convenience and security of watching films at home. This development demonstrates how advancements in film distribution and technologies progressively influenced society, following to the processes defined by the Diffusion of Innovation Theory.
