One of the techniques was irrigation. Irrigation is a system for watering crops, with irrigation Sumerians could keep crops alive during the hot exhausting summer. They also created irrigation canals to lead water from rivers to their fields.  The next technique they used was the plow. Before they invented the plow they would take sticks and poke little holes in the ground one by one. This made work very slow. They started writing when the Sumerians had to start keeping track of records. They started drawing simple pictures with a variety of objects. Sumerian priests had developed a way of writing that would be able to record far more than numbers of objects. When the people realized how useful writing was priests set up schools to train scribes. They eventually made a written language called cuneiform. The definition of cuneiform is, the written language of Sumer.
