I’d like to highlight why I like PISA as an assessment item that attempts to test the ability of students to apply their school learning to ‘real world’ contexts. I think many of us can agree that a lot of what we learn in school may not be clearly linked to real world applications and as opposed to an ‘education’ or building knowledge, we become very good at ‘schooling’.

I think the most interesting point from these findings is the correlation between socioeconomic status (SES) and academic achievement. In Mathematics, Reading and Science, students with a higher SES were more likely to meet the National Proficient Standard (72%, 75%, and 78% respectively) than students with a low SES (30%, 41%, and 40% respectively). I think this data really highlights the need for change in the way education is delivered across Australia.

Something I would like to highlight is the incredibly low percentage of achievement for First Nations students. Less than a third of all First Nations students that participated in PISA achieved at the national proficient standard. I think this shows how the curriculum and schools arent meeting the needs of Indigenous students. I feel it is also quite commonly found that a lot of First Nations students live in rural and remote areas which add extra layers of disadvantage for the students. While the Non-First Nations percentages arent insanely high either they are still double that of the First Nations Students and more than half of students across the board.

I found the reading, math, and science results interesting. They show a steady decrease in student achievement, possibly due to a reliance on technology in education and at home. This could also be due to education taking a back seat at home and COVID-19 students more recently. Seeing it as a steady decrease is concerning as it shows that no matter what changes are made to the curriculum and teaching processes, the results are not improving. Whilst I recognise that change takes time, it is still concerning to see these results.
