While they have help to raise their elbow or stabilizes their shoulder, seomtimes the typing of their thoughts led to dyregulation. They were using their pointer fingers to type, which can be time-consuming and difficult, so I can only imagine how difficult and frustrating that may be when trying to communicate one's thoughts and feelings.

When trying to communicate it can be hard when there are other things going on in their current environment. It could be people talking, music, loud noises, or maybe something else visually distracting. This can make communicating challenging and frustrating since the distractions can make it harder to try to get out a certain thought.

For them to communicate using the device, it takes a lot of focus and concentration. They type using their pointer finger which can take them a long time for them to express a single thought.

I think something impactful is the view of ASD through various cultural lens. Not only did Larry and Tracy get to spread awareness, but through their travels, the documentary also reveals how different cultures view ASD.

It is important to allow people to communicate themselves. Don't talk over them or answer for them, even if it may seem easier or quicker. Also if you are assisting someone by reading what they typed, read exactly what they said, don't add or leave out words to change the message.

Providing the options for breaks or providing encouragement when communicating becomes challenging can be helpful. Understanding that different topics can be harder to communicate than others.

Seeing how use of AT can make life/communication more accessible as well as can promote a sense of independence is impactful. These devices can help them buy things from the store, communicate with family, and help with small day to day tasks with any other necessary support as well.

When emotions become heightened, their support person remains very calm. They acknowledge that it is a heavy emotion and talks them through the feeling by reminding them to breathe. I can see how important it is to remain calm, give time to regulate emotions, and provide support when needed.

The connections the participants made through the film were impactful. They all shared a goal of spreading awareness of disability around the world, and they were able to work together and create a strong bond over that.

I found it surprising that Naoki wrote several books was not able to attend their local high school. I wonder why it was not allowed whether it was funding, not having the required AT to provide access to the curriculum, or a lack of open-mindedness. No matter what the reason was I was surprised and upset that someone who shows their intelligence in a different way is restricted from obtaining a education from their public high school.

All students, no matter if they have a disability or not have the capability to learn and understand, even when communicating in a variety of ways. Consequently, educators should not lower their expectations or standards based on how one communicates. Also, educators need to take the time to form and develop relationships with their students, ensuring that the students understand that they are seen, valued, and accepted for who they are, including the unique perspectives they bring to the classroom.

By giving students the opportunity to be independent and advocate for themselves is very important. The communication process was a much slower process and people had to be patient to allow them to speak their thoughts and ideas. I have students this year who have slower processing speeds. I used to ask a question and if they did not answer me right away I would try to ask more questions/rephrase them to help guide them. I now ask one question and give plenty of wait time so they are able to communicate for themselves, not feel rushed, and demonstrate their knowledge without interruptions.

I think as educators we can keep a few things in mind:

remember that sometimes the subject matter can sometimes be difficult or upsetting to talk about, so make sure to appraoch the conversation with emapthy
give enough wait-time so the student can communicate what they wish to without anyone guessing or trying to "fill in the blanks" of what they think they are going to say
- be patient and leave space for dialogue
never underestimate capabilities, rather provide students with the supports they need to showcase their true potential
provide the option of a break (this can help to prevent dyregulation that can come with the exurtion of typing long pieces or from difficult subject matter)
