Ud over Litauen og Estland grænser Letland også op til Rusland og Hviderusland. Letland er med sine ca. 64.600 km2 en halvanden gang større end Danmark. Letland er et land med mange bakker og med omkring 12.000 floder der munder ud i Østersøen. Over halvdelen af landet ligger under 100 meter underhavets overflade og Letland er dækket af 40 % skov. Grundet de kæmpe skovarealer er det et paradis for balterne som bare kan boltre sig i den vilde natur. Letland ligger mellem to klimabælter. I øst er der fastlandsklima med meget svingende temperaturer.  I vest er der kystklima med milde somre og vintre.

Efter 1991I skiftede Letland også fra planøkonomi til markedsøkonomi.
