People in Maycomb were unfamiliar with Boo Radley, so whenever there was an unusual occurrence without explanation, it was blamed on Boo Radley because people didn't know anything about him. Scout explains this by saying, "When people's azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them" (Lee 9). This relates to superstition because people in Maycomb believe that unusual things are caused by Boo Radley

Jem demonstrates his own beliefs in this superstition when Scout begins to chew gum left for them in the Radley yard. “Don’t you know you’re not supposed to even touch the trees over there? You’ll get killed if you do!” (Lee, 37). This relates to the motif of superstition because Jem believes anything found in the Radley yard will kill you.

Walking Over a Grave

During the Middle Ages, the phrase "somebody just walked over my grave" was used when someone got the chills. This was superstition formed because the people of that time didn't know what caused the chills. Aunt Alexandra used this phrase after being asked what was wrong, She said, "'Oh nothing, nothing,' she said, 'somebody just walked over my grave'" (Lee 291). This relates to superstition because she uses it to show that she thinks something bad is going to happen, which is causing her to get the chills.

Hot Steams

According to Jem, a Hot Steam is somebody who has died and is unable to go to heaven. "A Hot Steam's somebody who can't get to heaven, just wallows around on some lonesome roads an' if you walk through him, when you die you'll be one too" (Lee, 41). This relates to the motif of superstition because Jem has his own theories of the afterlife and supernatural beings such as ghosts.

Superstitions Today

Nowadays, superstitions are everywhere. We see them in many different ways - four leaf clovers bring good luck, black cats bring bad luck, if you catch the bride's bouquet you will wed next, the saying 'knock on wood' which supposedly wards off any trouble, and many more. People have these superstitions for a number of reasons, the biggest reason being people feel not having control over the outcome of a situation is frightening, so they use these superstitions to dream up an outcome even though it may be unrealistic. Somehow, all of these simple actions/sayings have been incorporated into the daily life of people all around the world.
