         <description><![CDATA[<div>Each lesson is supported by resources in order to support historical thinking through investigations, interrogating evidence and looking at characteristic features. The series of lessons focus on the importance of an event and how this has been signified in the resurrection of a memorial, which then progresses onto the children designing and making their own memorial for the great fire, using opinions gathered by the public on the field trip and using other sources such as books and websites. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Monument is a monument set up in order to remember the Great Fire of London. It was built 5 years after the fire and still stands today. If the building fell down it would reach the exact spot in Pudding Lane where the fire started. In order to carry on the introduction to the topic a trip to the monument will help the children to imagine and visualise where the fire happened. This will also give them an idea of a purpose of a monument and one way they can be represented. Following on from the previous lesson of the introduction of the Great Fire the children will be able to use digital resources in order to find the monument by looking at google maps as well as maps from before and after the fire in order for the children to compare sources-develops historical thinking. This will allow the children to see in person the monument in relation to it on a map, whilst also using their map navigation skills. The children can then use the map to find their way to pudding Lane. They will do this in groups with an adult. The children can then use pictures of old maps they will have on a tablet or ipad/ printed copy to see if some of the roads on the old maps are still remaining or not. The children can then use cameras to take pictures of significant things on their trip in relation to the fire. They can also then use their ipads or tablets to do digital drawings of the monument. <br><br>The children can also have a set of questions that they decided on as a class before they leave school for the trip that they can ask members of the public in order to get their impression of monument.They can use voice recorders so they can play back the answers.  This can then help the children in the next lesson. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Lesson 1- What was the Great Fire of London? Teacher&#39;s notes </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The first lesson will be an introduction to the Great Fire of London and will help the children to discover what the fire was and how it started. A video that introduces the fire and how it started and spread through London will help the children to visualise what London looked like in 1666 and we start the process of interrogating evidence and identifying characteristic features. This will then be followed by some key questions in order to develop and extend the children's understanding and any information they gained from the video, and lead an investigation which promotes children's historical thinking skills. The children will then have to think what it would have been like to have been someone living in London during the fire. They can do this by looking at a range of resources which give some insight into the fire such as paintings, maps, Samuel Pepys' diary, newspaper articles and books on the event. This will then lead onto the children writing a poem of how they would have felt at the time of the fire if they was there and to then&nbsp; perform their poems to be filmed and put together as a collection of poems from each child which would require video cameras as an extra resource. This can then be sold as DVDs for the parents to purchase or uploaded on a school blog or youtube site for other schools to see.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This painting is very interesting as it has two people in the forefront. The children can discuss their emotions and why they may be feeling this way. The children can then also move onto discussions about why this may have been painted- the significance of recording the event. <br><br>Follow on lessons- Whilst also experimenting cross circularly with this image in art by using chalks, pastels, paint or collage to create an image that represents a fire, thinking outside the box, using colours that are not the obvious choice for a fire but are complimentary.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lesson 4 will focus on the children designing their own memorial for the great fire of London. They can listen to the answers they got from the public on their trip and their own ideas in order to create a memorial they think is worthy of signifying the Great Fire of London. They can call upon their pictures they drew on the trip as well as pictures taken. In order to develop this further the children can look at images of other monuments around the world in order to inspire them. They can re-look at the maps in order to select the place they would like their monument. &nbsp;<br><br>this lesson will develop the identification of historical characteristics, as well as enquiry skills and interrogation of evidence .&nbsp;<br><br>Lesson plan:<br><br>Children start by drawing their idea (using the resources above)&nbsp; and placing where they would like their monument on a printout picture of a map of London.&nbsp;<br><br>The children can then start making their monument out of paper mache .&nbsp;<br><br>Follow up lesson:<br><br>The children can paint and decorate their monuments.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In order to recap over their learnt knowledge from the first lesson , the second lesson will follow on looking at sources about the fire. The children will have to pick a statement each about the fire. some may be true some may be made up, so the children will have to interrogate the evidence in the sources,, in order to find out if their statement is true or false. This will help the children to look for historical characteristics and features as well as looking at evidence and looking at the validity of the evidence. If the children have a statement which is false but are able to find enough evidence that they can justify as backing up their statement then they have achieved the aim of the lesson.&nbsp; This lesson again promotes historical thinking through the use of the sources/resources even though many are similar from the lesson before they are used in a different way in order for the children to gain a knowledge of how differently resources can be used in history.&nbsp;<br><br>The children will have to write down the argument that supports their statement and where they got the evidence from in order to justify and back up their arguments. </div>]]></description>
