8th grader, Sarah Lee walked into the school. Looking around, she saw so many more people than she was used to for the past year and a half. She saw her friends on a table, but she didn't go to them. She went to a different table and sat by herself, and scrolled through her phone. All of the social anxiety inside her built up and forced her to be by herself, just like how she was during quarantine. She wondered when she would finally overcome her anxiety and be happier. But it would take a while, because it won't be so quick to let go of a habit of a year and a half. On September 8th of 2021, Sarah Lee started getting social anxiety as a result of the pandemic. But it was not only her that changed.

6th Grade Boy Liam was sitting on the chair, his hands were just scrolling and scrolling and he could not stop. Being rude to his parents, siblings, and friends. All because he was too addicted to his cell phone. Screen time has had a big effect on kids ages 8-14. They are spending more than 7 hours a day on screens (cell phones, TVs, computers, etc.)

She strained to hear what they were saying, and caught snippets of their conversation. “Overdosed… crowded area… looking for attention… nothing to worry about…” She realized that the doctor was telling her parents that there was nothing to worry about because she just did it for attention.

Abigail Dawson covered both of her ears with her hands and squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself to not cry. Her parents were fighting, again, and it was probably the nastiest one this week. Ever since they had decided to get a divorce, they were fighting even worse than before. Divorce was tearing her family even more than the reasons why her parents were fighting in the first place. She didn't know it then, but she would soon learn that everything would collapse in her life. Her grades would go down, and she would end up dropping out of her high school. She would also quit fencing, and her dreams of making it to the national team would be crushed. She would develop depression and anxiety, and she would stop talking to her friends. She would spend all her free time alone in her room. She would never have a healthy relationship with her parents, and she would shut everyone and everything out of her life.

That one decision altered Dawson's life . And she is not alone.

On September 21, the day prior to the suicide, the roommate allegedly urged friends and Twitter followers to watch via his webcam a second tryst between Clementi and his friend.

Megan had suffered from severe depression from the age of eight and was already taking anti psychotics and antidepressants. While they helped slightly, she still suffered from her mental illnesses. A female neighbor set up a MySpace account and pretended to be a male to tease Megan. At first, Megan found herself attached to this “Josh Evans,” but “he” later turned on her and started discussing some rumors he'd '' heard. At first it all started private but then he started sharing their private messages and went public with a declaration that the world would be better without her. Megan, already susceptible to depression, believed that comment. After telling him that “you’re the kind of boy a girl would kill herself over,” she took her own life in her bedroom. She was just 13 years old. So many more incidents like these happen everyday but get neglected because they don’t know who to go to. Be that person and show them they’re not alone in this.

The other girls gigged, going along with the girl. “N-no!” she said, waving her hands around. That day would change her, it gave her a whole new insight to how she viewed the school.

Since social media can be a hurtful place people have to figure out how to avoid the negativity. If you see something bad, report it. This way less people will see it and fewer people will be affected by it. With that being said when fewer people are being negatively affected by social media, then those people will be less likely to be exposed to not age-appropriate content, cyberbullying, depression, and anxiety. Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph, MD says “Think twice before hitting "enter”. By doing this you are making sure that you have nothing inappropriate and no personal information in what you are posting. If you don't have any then make sure that it wouldn’t hurt anyone, if not then post!

While society today is making massive leaps in terms of progression (women’s rights/ laws for the betterment of the treatments of women, banning of racial segregation, laws concering religious discrimination of Jewish and Muslim peoples, and anti-bullying laws), we’ve still got a ways to go in terms of protecting the LGBTQ+ community. There are few countrywide laws banning healthcare/housing/adoption discmination on basis of sexual/romantic orentation or gender/gender identity, and none banning workplace discrimination in the United States. As a country we need to change this. There are a good ammount of resources for helping LGBTQ+ friends, family or partners. Examples from LGBTQ+ Resources - Department of Mental Health include The Trevor Project Lifeline, Colors Youth, and Trans Lifeline. If you see someone in public getting harassed, stick up for the person. If you or someone you know is being abused for their sexuality or gender identity, report their abuser to the police. Don’t stay silent. If you see something, say something. Take to the streets with LGBTQ+ community members and allies alike to protest this injustice, know your state’s laws and know them well. If you aren’t comfortable going out in the streets, post petitions and fight for LGBTQ+ members rights on the internet. “Become an advocate for inclusive sex education. LGBTQ youth and allies can speak to school health advisory committees (SHACs), school boards, school administrators and teachers about the need for sex education programs that meet their needs. Some SHACs include student members, so consider joining to advocate for inclusive curricula. School clubs, such as Gay-Straight Alliances, can also play a role in educating peers and advocating with educators at school for inclusive sex education.”

Once something is on the internet, it is never truly gone; someone somewhere still has it, and you never know what they might do with it. The more people we have in one place, the more secure the area should be because it is difficult to look at everyone and make sure they are all okay, and we often look past it and don't even realize something much bigger is going on, such as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is more complicated than we realize. How much do you think you know about cyber bullying? Everybody can make a difference in cyber bullying. You can make a difference by reporting an insult or a comment you read that is hurtful and by telling the cyberbully what they are doing is wrong and showing them how it affects them. Every person in this world has to understand boundaries and the difference between a joke and an insult. Can you explain the difference? If we can understand this, cyber bullying will decrease massively. Although all of it can’t be stopped, even an effort can make a bigger difference than you think.

But never in a million years would she think that her mom would have to say that her mom and dad were separating. She couldn't mentally process the thought of not having both parents around anymore. Nine year old Emma Wilson has to face her fear of losing one of her parents. She wasn't alone though. She had friends who often asked her if she needed anything and always reassured her that she was okay. Know you're not alone.

There is a lot of diversity in the world and that means we have to be kind and fair to everyone no matter their religion, looks, or anything else. There are also a lot of organizations that are being created and a bunch of programs you can join to help decrease and get rid of bullying. There are organizations like Stand for the Silent and others like Stomp Out Bullying. These are both good ways to help people who are being bullied and to bring awareness to those who want to help get rid of this worldwide problem. “Standing Up Against Hate, Racism, And Discrimination. Also what they should do if they see it happening or if it's happening to you, what you should do.
Tears trickled down her face as she sat on her bed. Just one more question, she constantly repeated to herself. She saw no end in sight. She had been sitting on her bed, working on her homework for the past two hours. Her head hurt, she was overwhelmed, she just wanted to be done with it and go to sleep. Never again would she have the same, motivated attitude that she had in school. One night of homework forever changed her view on school.

In a society filled with many different views and opinions on homework, it may be hard to find a place to learn about the stress homework induces, and how to help lessen the stress. For example, schools are trying out a new no-homework policy. It has lessened stress on the students, and improved their math and science grades. It also gives students more time to spend with their friends and family, which is very important for growing children. What can be done to help this? You can advocate for the stress homework causes anywhere. Social media, schools, even your parents. Even if the amount of daily homework is simply lessened, a serious and effective change could be made.
