Quote by Robert C. Evans "Kathleen B. Durrer: A FEMINIST critic might object to this passage if it were analyzed as a single sentence, separated from the story as a whole, 96 Close Readings because this sentence portrays Louise as both mentally and physically weak (a typical stereotype of women at the turn of the century). Louise is presented as mentally weak because she lacks the needed will power to combat “this thing” that is approaching her. Louise is also presented as physically weak because her “two white slender hands” would probably be “powerless” to defend her from a physical assault. Both images reinforce the stereotype that women are unable to deal effectively with threats in their world. Women allegedly needed to be shielded from the
harsh reality of the world and protected by males, who supposedly were
both physically and mentally stronger."

Quote by Mark Cunningham "Nowhere in the passage does Chopin state that Lousie sees Brently enter. Indeed, while Chopin describes the activities of Josephine, Richards, and Brently, the reader learns only in the last sentence, after the events are over, that Louise has died. This is in keeping with the thermatic develpoment of the story. Mary E Papke has noted that the reader learns Louise's first name only after Louise accepts her "new consciousness" of freedom; before that, Louise is "Mrs. Mallard", one can extend this line of analysis further: as long as Louise is "Mrs. Mallard" or as long as she remains in her room after hearing of Brently's death, the reader has access to Louise's thoughts. However, once Louise leaves her room, once she re-enters society as an independent individual, her thoughts are her own."
