This is a letter that went home in English, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish, which are the most common languages spoken by families in our class. It’s a small example of something we do consistently, making sure all families can access important information in their home language. It’s not just about communication, it’s about helping every family feel included and respected. This kind of effort shows how much our school values linguistic diversity and works to create a welcoming space for everyone.

These are a few of the books we use in our classroom that celebrate different languages and cultures. Pepita and the Bullyblends English and Spanish in a way that feels familiar to many of our bilingual students. Drum Dream Girl tells the story of a girl whose music breaks barriers, all while honoring her Afro-Chinese-Cuban roots. Omar and Oliver is written in both English and Arabic, and gives kids a chance to see Eid traditions reflected in a fun, relatable way. The Tale of Nian brings the Lunar New Year to life through both English and Chinese.

Books like these help students feel seen, and they remind us all how powerful our voices and stories are, no matter what language they’re in.

This is the first thing you see when you walk into our school...a welcome board filled with greetings in many different languages. It’s a small but powerful way to show that all languages and cultures are valued here. We hope that by students seeing their home language represented reminds them that they b elong here. It sets the tone for an inclusive, respectful space right from the start.

These murals are made from students' handprints, each one decorated with the flag of their family’s heritage. Together, they form trees that represent how our differences make us stronger as a school community. They remind us that every student brings something meaningful to our shared space. Projects like this help students feel proud of who they are and where they come from, and show that their cultures are not just acknowledged, but celebrated.

This place value mat includes Mandarin translations for "hundreds," "tens," and "ones" to help support our Chinese speaking students during math lessons. Tools like this make it easier for students to access new concepts while building confidence in both their home language and English. It’s a small change, but it goes a long way in making learning feel more inclusive and connected to who they are.

This is an example from our school’s Book of the Month program, where every class reads and discusses the same book together. The goal is to build a shared experience across grades while introducing students to stories that reflect diverse voices, histories, and perspectives.

This month’s book, Emma’s Poem, tells the story behind the poem on the Statue of Liberty and invites students to think about the immigrant experience. It opens up conversations about belonging, compassion, and the power of welcoming others.

The task cards you see here are used to guide students’ thinking and discussion. They encourage kids not just to understand the story, but to connect it to real world issues and emotions. Programs like this show how our school uses literature to support culturally responsive learning and to help students see the value in every person’s story.

This is our school’s breakfast menu for April. You’ll notice that many of the items are labeled as vegetarian or vegan, giving students options that respect different dietary needs, whether for cultural, religious, or personal reasons. There are also dairy free and nut free choices available daily. This is one way our school shows respect for students’ diverse backgrounds.
