As a professional in a specialist school, I believe that it requires a child-centred, inclusive approach tailored to individual needs:

Protection: Creating a safe physical and emotional space is vital. Promoting strong safeguarding practices, staff training in trauma-informed care/ ELSA, and build trusting relationships with children to ensure they feel secure and supported. Anti-bullying policies and respectful behaviour cultures would be actively upheld.

Provision: that every child has access to personalised, high-quality resources and learning opportunities. This includes differentiated instruction, accessible materials, therapeutic interventions (e.g., speech and language or physiotherapy), and specialist staff to support learning and development in a safe, nurturing environment.

Participation: Prioritise giving children a voice in their education—through student councils, visual communication tools, or one-on-one conversations, depending on their communication style. Empowering children to make choices about their learning and routines promotes autonomy, self-worth, and a rights-based ethos. Allowing their voice to come through in their IDP's, Annual Reviews.

Together, these principles help ensure that all children, especially those with additional learning needs, can thrive in a rights-respecting educational setting.

Zoe
