Proposal 1:
Priya is interested in whether listening to music while working out makes people exercise harder. She plans to ask college students to come to the gym and run on a treadmill for half an hour either while listening to music or in silence. The dependent measure will be the number of miles run in that time period.
Questions:
What additional information might you want to know about the study in order to decide whether or not it should be approved?
What are the benefits that might result from this research? What are the potential harms?
If you were on an IRB reviewing this proposal, what would your recommendation be?
Proposal 2:
Tyrone wants to study the impact of watching sexually suggestive/explicit television on people’s attitudes toward sex. He plans to test ninth graders because he believes they are still young enough to be highly impressionable. He will solicit volunteers to come after school. Half will be assigned to watch one hour of sexually explicit clips from a cable TV show while the other half will view an hour of clips from the same show that deal with nonsexual topics. After watching the TV shows, all participants will fill out a questionnaire about the attitudes toward sex.
Questions:
What additional information might you want to know about the study in order to decide whether or not it should be approved?
What are the benefits that might result from this research? What are the potential harms?
If you were on an IRB reviewing this proposal, what would your recommendation be?
Proposal 3:
Charlotte wants to research the effect of labelling students (gifted vs. struggling) on their achievement in second grade. She proposes that students in an elementary school’s second grade be divided into reading groups in which ability levels (as determined by previous test scores) are evenly mixed. One group will be told they are gifted readers, another group will be told that they are struggling readers, and a third group will be told nothing at all. Charlotte theorizes that by the end of the second-grade year, the students in the “gifted” level group will outperform those in the “struggling” group on the same reading test.
Questions:
What additional information might you want to know about the study in order to decide whether or not it should be approved?
What are the benefits that might result from this research? What are the potential harms?
If you were on an IRB reviewing this proposal, what would your recommendation be?

1. I would like to know what the reading habits of gifted and struggling students are, do their parents and themselves agree with this research, that we need to pay attention to the psychological problems of children.
2. 2.The benefit of this study is to see if attaching the idea of genius to a child is helpful. Also can let originally do not work hard after being told is a genius to become hard. Some children are told that they are genius. they may work harder, so they may become better. However, some children are told that they are mediocre, they may give up study or be lazy, which has a great influence on them. So the potential danger is great, even if it is told at the end.
3. Before a proposal is submitted to a funding agency, the IRB analyzes it to see if it complies with ethical principles and federal regulations for the protection of human subjects. These projects can be approved, disapproved, or require changes by the IRB.

1. Does everyone listen to music when exercising? What kind of concert makes people exercise harder? What is the difference between listening to music and not listening to music?
2.The benefits are that music can help to reduce fatigue and enhance the effect of exercise. The potential hazards are that listening to music on the run can be distracting and can lead to accidents caused by ignoring the surroundings, and that improperly chosen music with a rhythm that does not match the person's heart rate can lead to damage to the body
3.Voluntary registration of college student volunteers is required. Participation is not mandatory. Each person needs to conduct two experiments, one is to record the miles without listening to music, and the other is to record the miles while listening to music, and the running speed and other variables need to be unified.
2 (1) This research needs to seek the consent of students and students, and there should be age restrictions. If necessary, the consent of the guardian shall also be sought
（2）The benefit is that it gives children an awareness of sex, and this method of research allows for better comparison of results. The potential harm is that watching sex films for too long is not conducive to students' physical and mental health. The benefit of this survey is to gain experience by learning sex-related knowledge and to develop some awareness of gender and self-protection. The danger is that early exposure to sex education may have negative effects on students' minds
（3）I think we should pay attention to whether it is reasonable for minors to watch pornographic clips. Will this have an unhealthy impact on their growth?
3.(1) We should solicit students' opinions and always pay attention to students' psychology

（2）The benefit is that a sample of three groups consisting of different conditions allows clearer conclusions to be drawn. The potential harm is that it may wipe out the talent of children who are told they have reading difficulties and make them become less confident in doubting themselves.
(3）I think the members of these group members should be circulated and distributed equally

Proposal 1:
1. The health status of the participants, their medical history, to make sure they are on the same health condition. The types of music they listen to, will it be the same or not. What measures will be taken to make they environment remains silence. Beside miles, what other outcomes will be considered, for example the participants heart rate. Will the participants know the time when running or not? The age of the participants, if they are under 18, will there be parents with them?
2. Benefits: Can understand whether music affects people's workout process or not.
Harms: May cause harm to participants if accident happens during the research, for example falling off from the treadmill, or having medical issues.
3. Add more details to the proposal and give solutions to potential problems.

Proposal 2:
1.Before researching, it is necessary to investigate the wishes of the students whether they are willing to cooperate with the investigation of this research, because this is a rather sensitive topic, the age of participants should be reconsider, they are teenagers who are not able to do such research on their own.
2. Benefits:
1）Learn about sex and get some common sense.
2) Develop a gender awareness.
3) Develop a sense of self-preservation.

Harms: Due to the young age of the child, they might be severely affected by this research, and it is easy to be misled by some bad clips.
3.1. Through the presentation of research results, researchers may cause direct or indirect harm to research subjects.
2. Research projects need to be scientific enough to produce quality knowledge, not be a waste of time for the subject.
3. Students must be shown programs that adhere to all rules.
4. What are the measures for determining whether it will affect students' mental health?
5. How can the research protect children at this age, it is against law, will there be parents with them?

Proposal 3:
1 How the final reading ability level of these students and the psychological changes of students during the test will be.
2 benefits: it can encourage those students who are not given the label of genius to work harder, and it can also make those students who are not labeled feel their unknowns and explore their potential. Harm: make those who are labeled as struggling give up themselves, or make those who are labeled as genius start to be proud and stop trying.
3 suggestion: during the experiment, there should be accompanying psychological teachers to regulate the emotions of these students and prevent them from being too low self-esteem or too proud. And pay close attention to the children's psychological state, so as not to have an impact on the children's psychology. Communicate well with the parents of the experimental children to prevent their parents from being disgusted with the experiment.
