The similarities between Mississippi Burning and Dry September, is first of all the segregation. In both stories the theme is racism, differences between black and white, family, love and especially hate and also rumours. In both stories, we meet a group of fanatics, some people who is driven by a deep hate to other people with a different colour of their skin. Both stories take place in the Southern states of America, in the South there is this different way of thinking about the negros than in the North. In the South, they still see the negros as filthy, dirty unsanitary people, yet the American people from the North is trying to separate themselves from the idea of the negros being different from the whites.

The white people against the Negros. Critical situations are played out in the barber shop. The wife in both the movie and the short story is submissive to her husband. She is abused. Car chase – at night time. KKK. In both they are condescending towards Negros. Ward/Anderson and the barber Hawk are both protective of civil rights and they are not racists. Term of abuse like nigger-lover and Negro. Those who lead the troublemakers are white men with high power, like the Sheriff or Mayor. Black men would rather not be around white men on the street or in restaurants. Black people are underdogs.

The theme in both the movie and the text is segregation.

The social environment is the same, both story takes place in small cities in the southern states.

In both cities, the whole city know what is going on, but they do not talk about it.

In both the movie and the text, we have a group driven by hate, and purely made of white men. In the movie, we got the KKK, and in the text, it is a group of white men from the city. A white man with high status leads both group.

In both the text and the movie we learn, that even there is a form of mass hysteria towards black people, but not all white thinks it’s right, but very few has the courage to stand up to the groups.

In the text, we got the barber hawk, who stands up for the black people and in the movie; we got Agent Rupert Anderson and agent Alan Ward.
