Under the guidance of a group of Trustees, and led by Sir James Oglethorpe (a Trustee himself), the new settlers were to establish His Royal Majesty King George II’s thirteenth English colony which would be called Georgia. The charter granted by the King required the new colony to provide charity to England’s poor by offering a chance to start anew, provide defense by acting as a buffer between the profitable Carolina colony and any direct threats, and to benefit England economically through the natural resources and raw materials that would be sent back to the mother country.
