Even though this balanced the free and slave states, the fear of power failing to one side or the other grew.

Protective Tariff was taxes placed on goods imported and exported from and from America. Southerners thought that the tariff was in favor of the north. It was enforced to make the states buy more American goods then foreign goods.

The Protective Tariff, according to the southerners, was in favor of the northerners and they're factory's.

the Nullification Crisis was a fight between the U.S federal government and the state South Carolina. Vice President John C. Calhoun said that the south had the right to null,void the protective tariffs, or secede from the union.

President Andrew Jackson did not agree that his Vice President said that so President Jackson declared that states did not have the right to nullify or secede, therefor the Force Bill was passed.

Mexican-American War-1846-1848

The Mexican American War was a war between America and Mexico. America won and also gained 500,000 square miles from the Rio Grande river to the Pacific ocean. The war stemmed from the annexation of Texas.

The Mexican-American War gave america quite a bit of land which gave new opportunity's to expand slavery west into the new land which made the noth very upset.

The Compromise of 1850 was measures proposed by U.S senator Henry Clay and then passed by congress to settle issues connected to slavery and the dissolution of the union. It started by California want to be a free state.

The Compromise of 1850 contributed to the Civil War by the strengthened fugitive Slave act which endangered many northerners.

Uncle Toms Cabin-1852

Uncle Toms Cabin is about slavery, while the people in the book are fictional, the events are very real. It was the second most bought book under the Bible.

This book showed everyone the horrors of slavery and that made more abolitionist sprout up.

The Dred Scott Decision was a supreme court case where Dred Scott, an african american, attempted to sue sanford. He claimed he was free due to him living in a free territory. Slaves were deemed property, therefore cannot sue.

The dred scott decision deeply divided the nation along sectional lines, infuriating abolitionists in the North by ruling that enslaved people were not citizens and could not sue in federal court, and essentially validating the expansion of slavery into new territories.

Bleeding Kansas-1854-1859

Bleeding Kansas was a series of fights in the Kansas-Nebraska territory. People from all over came to vote for popular sovereignty. It quickly turned into a horrible conflict.

The vote over the status of the new territory caused both opponents and supporters of slavery to descend upon the region to sway the decision.
