A top student in her secondary school, Curie could not attend the men-only University of Warsaw. She instead continued her education in Warsaw's "floating university," a set of underground, informal classes held in secret. Both Curie and her sister Bronya dreamed of going abroad to earn an official degree, but they lacked the financial resources to pay for more schooling. Undeterred, Curie worked out a deal with her sister. She would work to support Bronya while she was in school and Bronya would return the favor after she completed her studies. For roughly five years, Curie worked as a tutor and a governess. She used her spare time to study, reading about physics, chemistry and math.

In 1891, Curie finally made her way to Paris where she enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris. She threw herself into her studies, but this dedication had a personal cost. With little money, Curie survived on buttered bread and tea, and her health sometimes suffered because of her poor diet. Curie completed her master's degree in physics in 1893 and earned another degree in mathematics the following year.
In 1903 Marie Curie became the first woman scientist to win a Nobel Prize; in 1911, she became the first scientist to win two Nobel Prizes. In 1903 Curie received the Nobel Prize in physics along with her husband and Henri Becquerel for their work on radioactivity. With their Nobel Prize win, the Curies developed an international reputation for their scientific efforts, and they used their prize money to continue their research.

Without any hesitation, I point Marie Curie. In the years when I was a high school student I read a book from her daughter Eva Curie. I have been strongly influenced by this strong person – Madam Curie. Later, as a physicist, I had the opportunity to study in more detail her scientific work and to appreciate it. I think Maria Curie is emblematic as a woman scientist. Ms. Bravo was a professor at the National Polytechnic Institute and a researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she graduated as a biologist. Helia Bravo received several awards for her hard work, including the "Golden Cactus", awarded in 1980 by the Principality of Monaco, for her studies in cacti, and the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the UNAM in 1995 In 2001, the Federal Government recognized Ms. Bravo for her contribution to the conservation of biological resources.
 
On September 26, 2001, Ms. Bravo died at 99 years of age.

The first woman in the world to win a Nobel Prize. This is how most of the biographies of Marie Curie begin, which at a time when only men went to university discovered a chemical element and started a real revolution in the scientific world.

Maria Sklodowska was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. The daughter of the physics and math teacher, Wladyslaw Sklodowski, and the singer, pianist and teacher Bronsilawa Boguska, the youngest of five children, was an excellent student. At eleven years old Marie suffers two major losses: her mother dies of tuberculosis and her older sister dies of typhus.

Always encouraged by her father to be interested in science, Marie finishes her studies at the age of 15 and goes on to work as a private teacher before moving to Paris in 1891 at the age of 24 to continue her studies. In 1894 she meets the teacher Pierre Curie with whom she marries the following year, then being called Madame Curie. At the time Pierre worked in the Laboratory of Physics and Industrial Chemistry in which they would work together later.

In 1883 and 1894 Marie obtained a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Sourbonne in Paris, and later became the first woman to teach at that university when her husband died in 1906.

In 1898, after having his first daughter, Irene (who also won a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1935), Marie Curie began her studies on the radioactivity that Henry Becquerel had discovered two years earlier (the term "radioactivity" was only coined by Marie Curie in 1898, but Becquerel had already done some studies on the radiation emitted by the uranium compounds in 1896, but he abandoned his studies in that he did not consider them to be promising, until then referring to the phenomenon as "hyperphosphoretic").
