Chronic or non-healing wounds is a profound issue individuals encounter worldwide. Annually throughout the United States, statistics show that over 6 million people suffer from delayed wound healing (Woodhouse et al 2021). Patients experience pain and discomfort that can debilitate their normal functioning. These healthcare cases leave a significant burden on family and caregivers as well. Delayed wound healing can often result in an infection that can lead to sepsis or amputation. Scientists at Purdue University created a microneedle patch that can deliver oxygen and bactericidal agents to chronic wounds to facilitate healing. This noninvasive technology is designed to deliver oxygen by releasing calcium peroxide into the wound. This technology has been tested and has been proven to be beneficial in promoting tissue oxygenation.

As a geriatric nurse, I have observed delayed wound healing on numerous occasions. Whether from preexisting medical conditions such as diabetes or vascular disease these wounds are challenging to heal and treat. I believe that further research and testing needs to be conducted regarding this innovation; however, it does offer beneficial affects. This technology is dire due to the rise of antibiotic resistant infections. The microneedle patch is essential research that can advance medicine by promoting improvements in wound care.
