I'm also teacher. I think the best is to share the time. So there is always someone "on site" and we know schools can't afford someone 100% dedidated. I think it's more and more necessary to have some knowledge in ICT. This became a big part of school infsrastructure and organization so you can't risk to cause security or availability issues. It's also a wellness issue: you always be ensured you'll be able so solve thinks quickly. This european network is a good thing, we all are alone in our schools and feel more secure if we know someone to ask for solutions or advice. I like 1-3 days trainings but I have to do it on holliday. I'm happy to read the results of the survey as I also think we are under stress and under-recognized.

Although we officially do not have an ICT administrator in our school, since I am an IT teacher I help whenever there is an ICT problem. I try to solve hardware problems, I install software and take care of the web page and online register books. Whenever there is a larger problem, we call our exterior associate.

I'm a teacher of maths and science. I try to help other teachers and administrative staff with ICT problems. It is always difficult to divide my time. In Italy teachers are expected to teach in their classroom, not being ICT administrator, thus I deal with ICT problems when I can. High professional qualification and training is very important. For me, it is always frustrating when I don't know what to do to fix an issue.

Considering the survey findings, I see that ICT school administrators face similar problems and challenges everywhere.
The biggest problem is, by my opinion, forcing ICT administration to teachers who teach full time and I think, in comparison with teachers in other subjects, ICT teachers are greatly discriminated.
Considering training, I think, that a person who wants to know has all the tools at their disposal.

I teach full time and because the director is also IT expert we both manage to help everyone in school. When I am not around he is doing all that is necessary and when I am there I do it. Everything is easier when the working team is good !
Trainning is neccessary but expirience in the "field" and learning directly from others is priceless....

The problem is common to all computer science teachers: for them this ICT stuff is surely a piece of cake... :) It's very frustrating to handle all the things: teaching, fixing hardware, updating software, administer various services and the most time wasting thing is the fact that the colegues rely on your help for the same thing on and on (like pushing the source button on the projector or pressing WIN+P to dupcicate the screen)...

School IT infrastucture is mostly outdated, network is not big (around 30 PC connected on 2 subnets), we dont't have wlan deployed so there is not so much issues now. I have no IT education, all I know about the theme is self-lerned. So I have lot’s experience in different parts of ITC: dealing with computer and devices maintainance and mananging different web-based products and environments. I lack some technical background in the fields of networks and servers. We have a specialist in our school to manage the servers but I’d liked to know more about it.

Each school should have a specially employed and paid ICT specialist. Computers and equipment are larger and one ICT teacher does not come to help everyone in maintaining the system. 'm a math and computer engineer and I hardly get to work all together with lectures and teaching. At home, I also do a lot because I have to learn constantly because of the new technology that is in constant development.

Last years all ICt hours on schools (3 hours/week , both on elementary and secondary schools ) have been canceled by the Ministry of Education <:-( .All my free time at school is dedicated to solve all days problems related to computers ( bugs, fixes, not working properly, hardware problems ) , network problems and support teachers . Only 7,5% of my work time in school is planned for ICT maintenance. In reality, it is almost a double.
If someone is qualified to be a ICT teacher then (with help of training like this one), it should be qualified to be a ICT administrator. Of course, it should be payed for this work.

I think that I need a qualification for ICT administrators. I know that I'm in good health in the cloud, but I always lacked the knowledge of hardware for creating a network at school. I have no desire to specifically investigate it. However, I am committed to introducing electronic systems in school and to sharing materials and collaborating with pupils in such a way. Nowadays I am working in a Teachers Resource Centre ( temporary ) but in my school I worked as an ICT administration as well as english teacher from preschoolers to the 6th grade of primary. In my opinion we should have different courses that covers different areas of our job as an ICT, just because this is an area that it is always changing with new proposals and tips.

I work full time as a teacher in computer science and "technical education". I also work as an ICT administrator in my school but I don`t get hours dedicated for that. I would say that I do at least 10 hours a week as an administrator (big school and 2 district schools). I learnt most on the job (13 years). I would like to learn more about networking because I feel that is my weakest spot. Online tutorials like this are fine but I believe that being an administrator should be included in weekly hour rate. That way we could invest time in properly educating ourselves. Way the things are now, we all (admins in Croatia I mean) just feel this as not welcomed pressure and extra work

My background is in the corporate/private industry sector where I was an IT Administrator. I commenced as an IT Co-ordinator 1 day per week in a large secondary school. I believe schools today need qualified IT Admins to support an enterprise level network that is required in many schools with many infrastructure complexities. Our network infrastructure, I believe, is very robust and is reliable and consistent. My challenge was to understand the needs of teachers and students in terms of using digital technology to enhance teaching and learning and to research the applications that might help support this.

As an ICT admin my main difficulty is the fact that i am a full time teacher too and it is not easy to perform both tasks succesfully. A lot of my free time as being spent to perform all the tasks that i have to and this is making things very hard for me. I believe that ICT admins should have at least 1 period for performing ICT related tasks each day.

Well, the survey got the good point. I was surprised that so many ICT administrators in school also teach. In Lithuania you need specific pedagogical courses, also bachelor degree in subject (this case ICT). Sadly, there is almost no training to ICT administrators, so you need to attend online courses like CISCO, or something else in your free time, also you should pay for your courses on your own. Generally speaking, you could land a job as ICT administrator in school without any ICT training but you will experience many problems, since whole school community is inmproving its ICT competences and faces increasingly complex problems.

I dedicate a 80% to teach (technology and computer science) and a 20% to ICT administrator. Concerning ICT tasks, I am very busy always specially on first months every course. Fortunately, I can organise my tasks freely and my boss don’t press me to do it. Needing a technical qualification to be an ICT is advisable to do better this work but it's not necessary. About training, I believe is a good idea doing mixed courses (online and classroom course) but I prefer online courses.

I teach and I have no reduction in my working time. My job as ICT administrator changes during the year, in quantity and quality. In my school there are some technicians who do many practical activities but they are not updated and my task of coordination is difficult because my role is not always adequately recognized.

I work in a secondary school with 1,000 students (14-20 years), 48 classes, 3 different courses of study. We use the Windows operating system and have three LAN three wireless networks (two locations + offices).

In this sector, annual or biennial updating courses on technical and pedagogical aspects would be necessary because I should be the interface between an ICT technician, teachers, students and staff.

Officially, 95% of my duties are teaching related (I teach mathematics and computer science) and 5% are administration. But I install software on all computers, manage school’s website and digital grade book, help teachers with their use of ICT and deal with minor technical issues. This means that I do quite a lot of work on voluntary basis, in my free time.
I think there is a need for full time administrators in schools in Croatia and teachers like me should only teach.

I am a teacher and I feel that the advise that I can give to our administrator is very important in using ICT as a tool to enrich learning in our school. I absolutely agree with Helen from Croatia. I am in the same situation (like most of the computer science teachers in Croatia). Ict administrating is a lot of work and needs to be handled by the professionals. As teachers, we should spend our time improving and raising quality in teaching

I am only ICT administrator. I agree with all of that saying mine colleagues from Lithuania. That is a lot of truth. Mine school wants that i teach something. But i know that time for the main job is not enough to do all the task, and when i must teach something? In here is a big school with many workplaces. So i refused to teach. Because i cant find time to do that. In this school i get here from big company. I like work hard but i think teaching is not for me.

I am not officially school ICT admin, nor is anybody else, but I am the one that is closest to this description.
Obviously, problem is that no one here even sees it as a job jet.
I am not sure about post-school education qualification in your poll. It seems like that without post-school education, the person is not trained at all.
If so, what about in-school training?

Of course I teach too and to do the ITC administrator I always spend a lot of extra, not reconized time to make all the computer network functions! I just do it as a mission...And I do it because in my school there was nobody able to do it! Not for money just for our students!

I have an it technician with some small network administrative tasks such as creating users and computer on these server, joining to the domain a similar staff. I do not teach and mostly responsible for helping teachers and all staff with their it needs set up classrooms, printers and check wifi connectivity.

I am the only school administrator in my school, but I enjoy it because I think dealing with real computers (which have to work!) is a part of my professional development.
My problem is that other teachers are working like beginners (regardless of their age) and the students learn how to use computers from bad examples. I teach students ICT/CS only one year, but students look at bad examples four years. It is a challenge, I have to make the environment so good, that other teachers cannot make mistakes.

I'm not a school administrator of ICT. I take care of just one computer - Linux server for 15 thin clients, and I spend the most time learning. I did not have any education. I would like to attend more complex workshops at least 1-2 a year. In addition to ICT, the administrator should also know how the school works.

I'm not a school ICT administrator, ther isn't such positions in schools in Poland, at least not one I know. I mainly deal with ICT problems because I often use technology in teaching so it's a must for me. Everything I do it's my extra work, apart fom teaching English on daily basis

This year we have to divide tasks because we are already 4 campus with 1100 students, 250 employers and 600 devices (ipads, laptops, desktops, informations systems). We have our service provider also our infrasctructure technical support. Ipad coach for each campus and a new person for information systems. I'm responsible for network and communications infrastructures.So, this year I'm teaching again.

How is your time divided between tasks?

Most of my schedule is filled with classes. For a 35-hour schedule, 22 are classes, 4 are filled with class direction, 1 with ICT management and the rest is individual work.

Is a qualification needed to be an ICT administrator, in your opinion?

It is not that you are able to understand things without a qualification, but it helps a lot.

What type of training do you enjoy most?

Training can be very time consuming and because of that I enjoy mostly online training where there are tasks to be performed but we have a time window that allows us to work in our pace.
