"Haunting Olivia" Discussion by Hillary Fifield

What we learn about the main character through his desire and motivation.

Respond to the questions: Where is the main conflict in the story? Is it internal or external?
And... you must add a thought, opinion, or a question to one other person's idea.

I think Wallow had in internal conflict that he did not want to believe Oliva was really completely gone. Timothy said many times in his thoughts at the end that Wallow wouldn’t” leave Olivia for the dead”. So Timothy and wallow are constantly fighting at each other because wallow does not want to give up.

We learn the main characters Wallow and Timothy have a desire to find their dead sister. Wallow seems to be almost fearless and determined to find Olivia while Timothy isn't as confident in finding her. The main conflict is both internal and external. There is a fight against Timothy's mind that's scaring him into seeing ghosts underwater. Externally, Wallow and Timothy argue over whether Olivia is still here or not

I definitely think that Wallow and Timothy are having exterior conflicts because they are fighting all the time. Wallow is also having interior conflicts because Wallow is not ready to give up on Olivia but Timothy does not believe that she is still alive.

I think that the conflict here is mostly internal and deals with the brothers, specifically Wallow. It is obvious that Wallow feels incredible guilt about the way that Olivia died, seeing as he willingly left her without a chaperone on the night of her death. My guess is that he thinks he owes it to her to find her body to soothe the unfinished business in his mind, maybe even hoping she's still alive for his sake.

The external conflict is apparent: Wallow and Timothy have lost their sister. They want desperately to find the answers but physically have a hard time trying to do so. The internal conflict being Timothy’s denial to the situation and his fight with his own self. We cannot control our external problems but I would say the story is mostly internal because we all process things differently and Timothy’s internal thoughts will not fade especially if acceptance doesn’t come to part

I believe the main conflict of the story is Wallow's inability to move on from the death of his sister and the guilt he feels over it. Though this problem affects both Timothy and Wallow, the conflict is internal as Wallow deals with his feelings by himself.

In my opinion, I think that the main conflict is that Wallow is incapable of moving on from his sisters death and is still desperate to find answers. That creates an internal conflict with the way that Wallow feels about himself. Although it affects Timothy as well, Wallow is definitely more beat up about it.

We learn that Timothy and Wallow have an external conflict between each other. Timothy doesn't want to search for Olivia while Wallow does and this leads to a lot of arguing. Timothy has an internal conflict with himself because of the fact that he isn't admitting that he wishes his family would move on from the death of his sister. Timothy realizes that he will never be as good of a brother as Wallow because of the fact that he doesn't want to search for her. Wallow also has an internal conflict within himself because he is having a difficult time coping with the guilt of leaving his sister alone the day she died.

I believe that the conflict is external, but there is also an internal conflict as well. The external conflict is finding Olivia, which creates more conflict between the two boys, Timothy and Wallow. They are constantly fighting with each other, because Wallow didn't want to accept the fact Olivia was gone, but Timothy knew she was not alive. The internal conflict is with Wallow. Wallow blames himself for Olivia's death, and will not stop until he finds Olivia and says sorry.
