Hi Folks,

I will be your instructor this term for FNST 100. I am from the Squamish Nation and have been working in Indigenous communities for fifteen years. I have worked at NVIT for the past six years and have a true passion for Indigenous Education. My education includes a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Capilano University and Masters Degree in Education from the University of British Columbia. I have a German Shepherd named George and my spirit is at its fullest when I am out fishing and hunting. I look forward to getting to know all of you this term and am excited to be apart of your academic journey.

I am from the Shuswap and Chilcotin nations. I am Married and also have 3 kids aged 6,5 and 2.5.I have done 2 years of studies at NVIT doing Office Administration Certificate and Executive Assistant Diploma. I took a year off schooling to find work, which landed me at NVIT as a Departmental Assistant last year. Right now I am working full time and doing part time schooling. I am taking my Associate of Arts Degree-General Arts because I am unsure about what I would like to pursue next. I chose this course because it was conveniently outside of my work hours, but also to learn more about who I am as a person. Growing up I was placed in foster care and never really learned much about First Nations culture or history. As I get older I am learning more and more. I really look forward to learning from this class and getting to know everyone as the weeks progress.

Hi I am blackfoot and cree. I grow up all over vancouver bc. I just moved back from Victora about 4-5 weeks ago and moved there in end of February. Upgraded at NEC now I decided to come to NVIT to start my Associate of Arts Degree -General Arts after that Im planning to take my Blachelor of social work. One thing about me is that Im working on being more spirital and culture. I have a tabby cat named Simba. I picked this class because I havent taken a First Nations class since high school and I wanted to refresh my memory. Im looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Kalhwa7acw! S'intsas St'at'imc and Dene. I am St'at'imc of BC and Dene of the Northwest Territories. I grew up in Kamloops and Lillooet. I am in my first year of my General Arts Certificate with a focus in Indigenous Studies. I grew up immersed in my rich culture and language of the St'at'imc people. I am from the Ulkatcho First Nations band located in Anahim Lake BC. My maternal grandparents are both Carrier. However my paternal grandmother is Chilcotin/Shuswap and my paternal grandfather is Irish. I am in my fourth year of the BSW program, I also have my Family and Community Counselling diploma. I have been living in Vancouver for approximately 15 years now, and I have 4 children. I'm looking forward to this school year, as I've had a very unproductive summer due to Covid.

Hello, I am from Merritt, BC. I was born and raised here. I have three younger sisters that look up to me. I am currently in year 2 of my associate of arts degree, my end goal is to teach in an elementary school. Next year I will probably transfer to TRU (Thompson Rivers University) to complete a bachelor of arts and apply to the teaching program. I am taking this class to educate myself on first nations and first nations history. I hope to gain a better understanding of the world and learn some new things.

Hello!

I am from Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan. I grew up in Calgary and moved to Vancouver 7 years ago. I am Saulteaux and Ojibway on my mothers side. On my dads side I am Metis and German. I am also a fourth year BSW student and graduated with my diploma in counselling at NEC. I took this class because I think I could really benefit from learning more about Indigenous history and culture because I work with Indigenous youth and with this class I can pass on the knowledge to them.

Something interesting about me is since the age of 7 to 17 I was doing Gatka which is a type of martial arts in my culture. I’m a Plains Cree from Peepeekisis Cree Nation located in southern Saskatchewan. I’m also a super busy mom of 2.5 yr old twin boys that rule my world. Currently, I’m in my first year of General Arts at NVIT and taking this course with a passion in acquiring as much knowledge of our First Nations history, culture, and traditions. I anticipate becoming a more empathetic listener and demonstrate a deeper connection when working and communicating with our families and communities. My educational goal is to successfully obtain my BSW so I can work with Aboriginal Agencies to help keep First Nations children out of foster care and with immediate family and/or their community members so culture and tradition are not lost.

I am from Merritt and returned home after a few years away. My wife and I missed our small town and family and wanted to continue our lives there after completing our respective programs at TRU. Im taking this course because I want to learn more and have a better understanding of First Nations culture.

Hello,
I am from Victoria where I grew up but living in Vancouver for almost 6 years. Currently I am in my first year at NVIT, hoping to finish with my BSW. I am a mom of a 16 month old boy who is my everything. I decided to take this course so I can learn more about the history and culture of indigenous peoples. It was also important to me to take this course because my partner and son are Cree. I am looking forward to learning more!

I am from the Okanagan Nation and Nlaka'pamux Nation. I currently reside in Merritt BC. I have a 3 year old daughter who just recently started preschool. I am working at Nlaka'pamux Health Services Society as a Wellness Coordinator. I took this course to broaden my knowledge on the Indigenous history and culture.

Hi all!
I was born and raised in Nanaimo B.C. and am first generation Canadian. My parent's are both Italian and immigrated to B.C from Italy in the 1990's. I am also Jewish through my mother's side of my family. I am a 4th year BSW student at NVIT. Previously I have obtained a diploma in Child and Youth Care, as well as a diploma in Mental Health and Addictions, both from Camosun College. I have taken this course to further my knowledge of Indigenous culture and Canada's ongoing history of Colonization. I look forward to the weeks ahead in this course! Thank you :)

I was raised in Vancouver although my family is mostly in the east. I am a proud mother of two beautiful children. I have recently been working in the addictions field, predominantly with youth and newly parenting mothers. I am of Welsh, Metis, and Austrian decent. My name is Stacey Berryman and I was born in Richmond B.C. and am currently living in Kamloops. I have a fiancé and we have six children ages 4.5 months, 9 years old, 9 years old, 10 years old, 14 years old and 16 years old. My fiancé is currently doing his last BSW practicum for 4 days a week and working 1 day a week on top of that. He will be going into the MSW program next year. I'm taking 4 courses so we are pretty busy people right now. The reason I am taking this course is because I'm interested in learning more about my culture and because I am going into the BSW program September 2021. Hi my name is Clif Garcia and I was raised in Merritt BC. I am back at school for the first time in over 20 years. I have recently started working at LNIB School as the PE teacher. I love working with kids and am very excited about working towards my education degree. I am a business owner in the Shuswap area, I own Adams River Rafting. I was born in Surrey, BC and spent most of my life living in Langley. I am returning to school for the first time in 25 years!
Previously, I was an Education Assistant with the school district. I have decided to pursue my Bachelor of education.
An interesting fact about me is
when I was in high school I took American sign language. I have since seen on campus that some of the signs in ASL are not the same. I look forward to learning some of those specific signs.
I enrolled in this course so that I have a better appreciation and understanding of my future students and their families.

I graduated high school a year early and got into 2 universities for heavy duty mechanics and then got invited back, I decided to take the teaching degree at nvit since I could no longer do HDM because of my concussion. I was born in kelowna and was raised for half my life in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Around the age of twelve I ended up living in Kelowna until I graduated. My family on my mothers side is from Stoney Creek reserve, outside of Vanderhoof. I am half Dakelh (Carrier). Something interesting about me, I was first place for the women's Individual category in the NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Provincial tournament and later trained to be a coach for the school program. I am taking this course because I am interest in the history of the First Nation Peoples. After meeting my biological grandparents this year after being in the system for so long. This made me realize that I need to learn my history and the history of the Native communities and problems we face in their lives.

I was born and raised in Merritt. I have travelled many places over the years, with my family and I like learning about different countries. My passion is Mountain Biking and this year I also started riding Endurance bikes and creating trails around Merritt to bike. I am taking the Diploma of Arts Program and this was one of the courses that fit into my schedule. I am working towards a teaching degree so I felt this course would be an asset to further education.
