team Mound

Health need: Susan & mark are uninformed about Andrew’s communication needs, leading to deadly miscommunications. They may injure themselves or Andrew through unsafe manual handling. They regularly misdose Andrew which can lead to ill health. Vague and misleading information regarding Andrew’s food & how he is able to eat, it is also concerning that his BMI is on the cusp of underweight.

Key Concern: Susan & Mark are our main concern due to inconsistentcies in their care & no possession of section 47 possible neglect.

Health inequalities for people with learning disabilities: why it matters and what emergency physicians need to know FEB 2024

Health needs - Legal/protection needs: (Section 47- unlawful treatment, infringement on Andrew’s rights. Clarification of guardianship)

Epilepsy care: Urgent review by epilepsy nurse, clear seizure management plan and parent training.

Medication: Medication review, are they still appropriate? Liquid meds if swallowing issue. Frequently missed doses- impact on physical health and mental instability. Is rectal diazepam appropriate? Undignified. Spoonful of jam- does Andrew know he’s taking medication, is this breaching his rights?

Nutrition and swallowing: SLT referral, dietician input.

Mobility/equipment: OT Physio input for safe transfers, hoist assessment

Andrew must be kept at the centre: Is Andrew being listened to? Health professionals should know Andrew’s typical presentation in order to prevent diagnostic overshadowing.

Key concern- No Section 47 certificate: unlawful medical treatment and lack of protection for Andrew’s rights.

Example from the literature: Shepherd, V. et al. (2020) ‘Healthcare professionals’ understanding of legislation governing research involving adults lacking mental capacity in England and Wales: a national survey’, journal of medical ethics 44(9), pp. 632-637.
