I believe this commitment is our school’s core. We have psychologists, Houses, and “School of Character”. The school I work at, is an international school so we have children from many different countries, with different languages, religions, traditions, etc. Therefore, integration and sense of belonging are crucial and a priority. We have constant communication with the Kinder psychologist so she can observe a child or arrange a meeting with the parents if we notice any red lights.

Andrea G

We have different “Houses” which are teams formed by children of different age groups so they can get to know people from other grades and earn points for different activities (sports, community service, recycling, etc.) In kinder we introduce a new value every month and children share examples during the morning circle.
Every year we have a Cultural carnival, an event where all cultures share food, traditions, games, and quality time all together as a community.
In my school, values are of great importance. They are involved on every activity we do.
Children also have a Social Emotional class, where they can talk in their first language and share their emotions.
In my class, I have an emotion ladder wehre children can place their names according to how they feel. Also, we do breathing exercises on a daily basis in order for them to regulate their emotions. We also have daily affirmations we repeat every morning to start a new day.

Andrea G

Distance learning impacted on children's well being as during the quarantine they couldn't be with friends, use manipulatives, ask for direct doubts, not being able to play outside, or just seeing other people. It affected many areas like their social skills (specially with the little ones), sharing, fine and gross motor skills, and well-being. Screen time can also affect physically so I could see how they were tired, wearing pj's, eating all day, or complaining about their little siblings or internet issues. I believe these two years affected every domain. We provided Social emotional classes, which I believe helped them to cope little by little with what they were going through.

Andrea G

We are al having different types of courses all the time that help us undertake this responsibilty in the bets way as possible. Students are also involved and we look for each other as a community.

It is emphasized through a number of very important safeguarding policies we are all expected to follow. All school staff- administrators, teachers, maintainance staff, and educational authorities - are responsible for the welfare and safeguarding of our students, who until the last year of our education (high school), are considered children. At each technical council meeting, teachers receive information, training and updates on this important topic, and all of us involved ensure that we follow the guidelines of these policies to the letter.

It is my responsibility as a teacher and coordinator to inform authorities when I observe any situation that seems to be threatening my students' wellbeing.

Gabriela

In my school there is a deep care of Pastoral Care. There is one head of department that organises activities every week involving the approaches mentioned in this presentation. Also, each teacher has a tutorship group and we meet each other every day before school to make sure that our students are ok. It is also an opportunity to socialise with students outside of the classroom or year.
I believe there is some room for improvement, because students not always take it seriously, they skip tutorship or find it monotonous. However, I believe the tutorship program helps to find a sense of community within the school. Sometimes students plan the activities, and they have been recieved with great success.
Another aspect of Pastoral care is the trainings we recieve during our weekly meetings. We deal with wellbeing and health issues, and every member of the staff is expected to be involved.

As I have mentioned, safeguarding policies have been created in order to make sure Our school's safeguarding policies establish clear and precise guidelines as to what to do when a student is experiencing a situation that puts his or her integrity as a person at risk. It is essential that all adults assume the role of safeguarding students and that we report situations that make us suspect that our students may be being assaulted at some level (physical, negligent, emotional, etc.). It is the responsibility of all adults to be aware of our responsibility when interacting with our students, and to ensure that their integrity as a person is always safeguarded.

Gabriela

My school does try to emphasize pastoral care, but it is mostly taken care of by the school psychologists. For this, students have a class called "SEL" (social and emotional learning) that is led by a psychologist. In these sessions, they cover topics such as dealing with stress, understanding emotions, how to cope with difficult situations, etc. Thus, they aim to develop students as wholes, where they do not only learn academic content, but can also strengthen their socio-emotional skills.
With distance learning, the focus has been on supporting students to deal with social isolation and uncertainty, opening up new "channels" for them to be able to express their feelings and communicate their concerns.

Daniela

It includes a daily homeroom period, where the homeroom teacher is in charge of developing different programs and activities with their students. We also have a House System, which allows students to meet, organize and participate in different events with students from all levels. We as teachers have also been assigned to a particular house. We have sports competitions, cultural events, debates, quizzes, etc.
Of course the pandemic has affected, but we are lucky to be back 100% since January. The cultural house competition last month gave our students the opportunity to perform: sing, dance, and act in front of the school. It was amazing to enjoy this activity in school.

How much is pastoral care emphasized at your school?
I think that my school provides the good amount of pastoral care. They are very involved in these topics and make us, as teachers, to be involved as well.

What pastoral care practices are held in your school?
We have a safeguarding department, personalize ed., yoga classes, headteacher hour. These departments are in charge of different well-being domains.

Who is involved in those practices?
The whole school at different levels. We need to be working as a whole in these domains.

How has distance learning impacted in the aspects above mentioned?
A lot. We lost a lot of connections between members of the faculty and with the studens. They also lost it between each other. It is important that everyone is related.

I have observed that now that we are back at school, we have started having more and more activities that foment a sense of ownership and provokes a healthy environment in it. We have had talent shows, chess tournaments, spelling competitions, presentations, assemblies with parents among other activities that permeates all levels of the school community. Apart from that, students have a class - 'Emotional Development"- where students can talk about their personal situations.
