When a Christian dies, it is seen as the end of his/her life in the physical world. Catholics believe they will go to the afterlife, where the deceased's soul will live in Heaven, Hell or Purgatory. “Through loving Christ and accepting the salvation offered by Christ on the cross, human souls be saved from eternal punishment in Hell after death and instead be delivered to Heaven, where they will live in the presence of God forever" ("Catholic Funeral Traditions", n.d.). Some Catholics also believe that when Christ returns, the bodies of the dead will be resurrected.

In beginning, when the Christianity emerged, physicians or religious personnel won't present funeral, it's more private. normal people's funerals were held by their family or friends. corpse was seen as the cause of ritual impurity, rituals around corpse was rare. "The living closed the eyes and mouth of the deceased, perhaps placing a coin for the underworld ferryman on the tongue or eyelids. They then washed the corpse, anointed it with scented oil and herbs, and dressed it, sometimes in clothing befitting the social status of the deceased, sometimes in a shroud" ("Christian Death Rites, History of - rituals, world, burial, body, funeral, life, time, person, human", n.d.). The corpses were placed in the necropolis outside the city. With the growth and development of Christianity, Christians changed their minds about death and dead bodies. For them, funeral is the "second death", they were died and given rebirth by the perpetual purification of baptism. Furthermore, bishop encourage people to look forward to death with joy, it's the passage form physical world to heaven.
