Diem had an arguably smooth promotion to a higher rank in the political sphere of Vietnam. With a great reputation at the top of his class, Diem showed potential in his youth. Nguyen Hu Bai felt endeared towards Diem on account of family ties, patriotism, and religious affiliations. The French rewarded Diem for shutting down Commuism resistance movements. Emperor Bao Dai received word of Diem's astounding character and further promoted him. These all resulted impressive status, a place in Bao Dai's cabinet, at only 32 years old by May 1933.
