The Soviets had recently invaded Afghanistan 1984- The next Olympics, the Soviets led a boycott against the Olympics being held in L.A. The world wide attention brought on extra stress and competition. Considering the fact that the nations were trying to expand their range of influence, winning the games was very important. When one nation would win a game, it would rally all their people. The USA is now considered more dominant compared to the Soviet Union, though both are still prominent in the Games. The Soviet Union (Russia) and the U.S. are still very competitive, especially when it comes to hockey. This is not currently related to the cold war, but it does still have ties to the Miracle on Ice.
