Hedgehogs were brought by settlers to New Zealand to remind them of their homeland. They were first introduced in small numbers but little by little the population grew a significant amount. The settlers later realized that the hedgehogs would be useful for eating annoying pests like snails and grubs, so they kept bringing more and more over with them.

It is said that in New Zealand, estimates show there are 2-4 hedgehogs per hectare (2.47 acres), and in some places, even as many as 8 per hectare. Hedgehogs pose a large threat to some of New Zealand's native bird species. They kill and eat chicks and eggs of many different bird species.

Some people have decided to set traps by bird eggs, as well as tunnels to get hedgehogs away from areas with high bird populations. Most traps are set at the beginning of birds' breeding seasons, where hedgehogs can cause the most damage to the birds.
