The sirens were beautiful women with either the wings and legs of a bird or a bird body. They sang to everyone on Odysseus' ship, but the crew was previously informed to put wax in their ears to block out the mysterious music. However, "Odysseus himself wanted to hear their song but had himself tied to the mast so that he would not be able to steer the ship off its course (Britannica)." It is believed that if a siren fails to lure a human, it will commit suicide.

Sirens were bird-women portrayed as seductresses that lured sailors with their enchanting music or voices. In Greek They are represented as birds with large women’s heads, for their scaly feet and feathers; however, in later folklore, they are portrayed as mermaid-like. For example, when Jane Ellen Harrison cautioned "they dwell on an island in a flowery meadow."

The sirens using their beautiful music to lure humans to the rocks represents the greed in humans. They want to hear something for their own entertainment, despite the mysterious timing. It could also be ignorance in thinking that there were no dangers in heading towards voices in the middle of the ocean.
