Silently, brainstorm on the following questions. I already had you think about this topic in your Reading and Writing Surveys, but now I want you to wonder a little more deeply.

What do you remember about how you learned to read or write OR what is your most significant memory of reading and writing?
What is significant in your memory or experience?
What does that memory or experience reveal about you?

An important memory of when I learned to read was in 1st grade at my new school. We were reading a book that had a lot of simple rhyming words, like “dot” and “spot.” I remember having to read aloud about “Dot likes pots with spots” or something like that. The significance of this was that this was my first time reading on my own. I guess this reveals that I learned how to read?

I picked up the book, “The Giving Tree” and read through the whole thing over and over again. It was the first book I read by myself and I was not really being forced to read, I just picked the book up and started to read it. I think it is an example of independence because no one told me to try to read I just did it.

An important moment from when I was little was when my dad used to read me and my sister Mouston Abby. We loved singing the cheesy diamond song at the end of the book. We read that book so many times and it was very repetitive. This reveals about me that repeating things is one thing that helps me learn.

What do you remember about how I learned to read/write? What is significant about the memory?

I don’t remember much about learning to read or write, but I do remember going to the library and picking out books to read when I knew how to read (specifically chapter books), and my mom reading Dr. Seuss books to me. I also remember loving each book that I read wherever I read it. What is significant about this is that I would get to imagine what each character and scene looked like. I would animate it in my mind and it would prove to me that I had at least a bit of imagination. That started a tendency to repeat what someone says inside my head to help remember it more and focus more. Furthermore, during the sermons at Church I will repeat each word and animate each sentence and story in my head to see what it would look like.
