The next 5 years will consistent of continued evolution and rapid change for education and it's relation to technology. Short, digestible bits of information will be necessary for the millennial learner. Interactive, video based platforms with "just-in-time" content will be critical for the next generation.

There will be a continued blurring of lines between education, learning and technology. We are moving into a future where technology opens up education to wider audiences where it doesn't just mean remote audiences but also those with disabilities (VR and enhanced technology can bring the use of "limbs" to those physically without). Teachers will become more of a facilitator as students are the ones driving the learning process and actually end up teaching each other instead of being "taught to".

In order to look forward, I'd like to look back, way back... Imagine the Flintstone era (the Stone Age)... Barney and Fred (cavemen) likely learned how to use the technologies available to them to create fire, and then taught Betty and Wilma (their wives) how to do the same. Eventually, they would pass this knowledge onto Pebbles and Bam Bam (their children) for use in future generations. I'm being a bit facetious in using a cartoon to illustrate my point, but in all seriousness, education, technology, and learning have always intersected, and I don't see that changing. The tools and technology we use will change, and how we learn may change, but the desire to learn and share what we've discovered with others will remain the same. - Amber

I see technology becoming more intuitive so that, as Dugg said, we will be learning via tech rather than learning to use the tech. More immersive experiences like VR and AR will allow us to interact in ways that are more natural to our minds than computer windows and track pads. At the same time, technology like smart watches allow us to be present in real world spaces, but still connected.

The user expectation moves more and more toward technology intuiting our needs and guiding us but we also need to move toward meaningful engagement. Educational institutions and trainers will continue to have engage students via tools they are primed to use for entertainment, and who assume they can find information when they need it.

To address this, I foresee both more fully immersive tools for practical learning, and more integrated support tools for people to use when they need them.

- Mary Ellis

Imagine taking artificial intelligence, competency based education, and personalized learning and stirring them in a pot. You might end up with something that figures out what you need to learn and how best to teach it to you. This service, maybe called "Watson Learn", would run on just about anything, including a mobile phone.

Now think about the billions of people living in poor countries that lack access to good education but more and more these days have access to a mobile phone.

Improved education will work wonders for these people and will be the big equalizer.

In 5 years or more, I believe education will be more comfortable with the use of technology and begin to see it as more of a benefit to learning, rather than something that needs to be worked around. My hope is that the online trend of university courses and possibly undergraduate programs will make learning more accessible and affordable to the world, resulting in larger opportunities to educate. It would be great for online learning to continue to leverage social learning and the interaction it can offer. This is especially true for classes with students from around the globe that offer differing perspectives in learning areas.

It seems that pilot training is poised to see a huge transition. We have a massive pilot shortage coupled with extraordinarily high cost associated with the traditional training models. As a result, there will be 'forced acceptance' of distance based/Virtual and augment reality / Evidence based training etc. There has been a long standing history in aviation technical training to resist deviation from accepted norms. Financial pressures, a young recruitment pool that is very technology fluent, and the raw speed of evolution will make the organizations unwilling or unable to adapt to next generation training obsolete/non-competeitive.

I see a very deep change in the making, and the reason is that with so many things evolving around us there is no doubt the ways in which current and new generations need to learn must evolve too. Technology is permeating in everything we do so learning and education shall not be the exception.
Knowledge is available in newer ways, and we are getting used to access it already. So, why keep on teaching the same way? Learning should be part of living just as technology has become an integral piece of daily lives.

-Alfonso
