medium: colored pencil
Pertaining to this artwork, it was inspired by the ethereal and whimsical qualities the music choice emoted. The instrumental effect of ambience reminded me of a distant, peaceful land far away from the pressure of society. The tune also gave me an uplifted feeling which alludes to the effect of the ripples in the stream the winds throughout the composition. The rolling hills that glide within the foreground & background are related to the tones that create the serene backdrop to the music as well as the artwork overall. The bursting flowers and tree blossoms, are also connected with the music and how it has a blooming effect in its rhythmic values. In all, the meaning the artwork correlates with the instrumentals envelops a mood in which the composition takes the viewer on a journey.

medium - acrylic paint/color tissue paper/textured paper
Stage 1
The two complementary colors I chose were red and green, which created a neutral tan color that blended with the base. I decided to leave the original painting mostly visible, because of the mood it portrayed with my overall theme. I wanted to create an asymmetrical effect that diverged the original painting from the layers that I was adding additionally by creating many diversely shaped triangle figures spread spontaneously across the canvas. From this, I was able to collectively integrate both the initial artwork and my own theme that stemmed from the original as a whole.
Stage 2
Pertaining to the collage aspect, I chose to add colored tissue paper to envelope a pastoral mood that contrasted the eerie one of the original painting. There was a small section of the canvas that had been cut in a rectangular shape, and so with inspiration from concept artist [artist’s name] I decided it would fluidly connect the two medias to utilize working with multiple layers such as the open space behind the carved out rectangle. Then I went from that point to create the effect that the tissue paper plants were bursting out from the canvas onto the landscape’s composition.
Stage 3
For initials, I simply thought it would flow well with the nature theme, to construct my initials out of green tissue paper, so they would seem to be part of the artwork, and not take away from the compositional perspective overall.

Conclusion: I would say, for my strongest compositional decision it would be the aspect of utilizing the piece of canvas that was missing rather than try to patch it up, but rather integrate it throughout the artwork to bring my theme of new life of nature blossoming form once decaying. I felt it gave a lot more of the surrealness and overall blend of the landscape in total, thus creating the natural yet oxymoron of the art piece.

medium: acrylic & oil paint/colored tissue paper
Based upon how I conveyed the areas of my project from the grid, my goals for this piece consisted mainly of creating a fluid style that effortlessly incorporated multiple subjects into a complete scene that looked as if it was from a story-book. In terms of subject, my main focus was that of architecture and the different vantage points of landscapes. The idea of the clocktower and the town combining into one scene overall, gave the artwork a variety of perspectives which assisted in creating a multi-dimensional view as a whole. Pertaining to media I expressed the textures in a variety of mediums. From acrylic paint to colored tissue paper, it created a vibrant effect in the landscape by accentuating certain aspects that layered the painting’s surface and values. The technique was one of layered media for the compromised view-points and fluidity of multiple basis of tones throughout the buildings and greenery. The painting was to have a stylistic note of blending between settings in coherency with the overall illustration. In the means of composition, it consists of a movement that is displayed in a rule of thirds and envelops the entire spread of the components comprehensively. The idea was to create a feeling that layered and blended the landscape which flowed, but also did not seem simplistic in the form of its appearance and layout. The aspect of working from a variety of vantage points when sketching proved to be the point that broadened my skills, and what I learned from this is the importance of using different tones of color to create impressionistic strokes that also gave the concept volume. Two qualities that are shown in the artwork would be the variety of textures with the effect of the media, and the blended renditions of the multiple structures in an architectural standpoint. In all, the artwork portrays a storybook-es tone, and creates a rich landscape in that sense.

medium: alcohol-based ink markers
Pertaining to the prominent goal of this piece, it was attributed to only using the singular medium of alcohol-based type of markers, which I was motivated to expand my skills at in the means of blending and coloring with different tones to convey dimensional values overall. The artwork subject portrayed the essence of a tribute to the classic rock band The Beatles in homage to famous landmarks that their songs were inspired after. From this I continued in my works of drawing complex poses of figures and proportions. The media, as stated before, was solely of the consistency of the markers and by those means developing skills of the tones and textures of the different features of the art piece in total. From this experimenting with blending and color schemes, it would add to the dimension of the artwork in that aspect. Conveying the technique consisted of using the inspiration of block colors, in which gave the piece a vivid pop that drew to the focal points throughout the artwork. This style added to the theme and colors of which were in respect of the Beatles’ album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” while also involving the iconic jump pose from their earlier works. The compositional notes was that of an asymmetrical value with the differing areas of the blending components of the landmarks in correlation with the Beatles themselves. This assisted in creating a wide range of perspectives throughout the piece as a whole. The factor of only using one type of media was the main part of the artwork that helped me grow in the means of expressing all the values of the artwork and color tones. What I learned from this is that it can add to one’s perspective about the use of media and the mood of the piece in terms of what that means to the artist, as well as the person viewing. The major qualities of the art are the elements of the figures and the variety of compositional aspects that tie into the piece overall. From this, the artwork portrays a mood that expresses a journey through the Beatles’ landmarks, and the contemporary yet jovial expressiveness of their style.

Anatomy Card Challenge

medium: graphite pencil/marker/oil pastel
This piece was inspired by the cards of which were the lymphatic system/vessel ducts, and the brain’s cortex of the nervous system. From that point my process consisted from the idea of the nervous system and encompassing the aspects of the brain and vessels. The composition of the piece overall is conveyed as the stages as an individual progressively becomes more lost in their worry and anxieties, and the bleak mood overcoming the piece in the dark tones portrays this element. The highlighting colors of the anatomy components of the brain and vessels bring attention to the affect of the phases throughout the visualization of the view points. By the means of media the initial stages of the person in the artwork was completed only in graphite pencil, which the outlines and bases of the brain and vessels were colored in marker. Then, to add depth and enhance these elements, oil pastel was added to blend throughout the the facets, which was also the media used in the neuron backdrop of the composition. From this, the background consisted of a monochromatic scheme of blue to blend the somber theme of this artwork in particular. Comprehensively, the aspects of correlating emotion and expressing a feeling created by the means of the cards chosen, tie into the view that perspective comes from one’s own unique outlook.

Throughout the course of this semester, and in summation over the past two years in this drawing/painting class, I have overall developed greatly as an art student in the means of my art skills and knowledge. I have accustomed myself to enhancing my perspective of compositions, and challenged myself with how to fluently work with a multitude of mediums, or even working solely with only one medium. I have also learned from experimenting with different techniques and a variety of effects based upon rendering values and tones with shading depth-perception. In continuum with my future goals I hope to further in my view-points for conveying ideas in a way that expresses creative capacity, yet also observe intuitive ideas of stylistic choices. As a whole, art and the process of it has shaped me into the person that I am today, and I believe that it is a skill that gives back to an individual throughout their whole life.
