The text If film is dead, what is cinema? written by John Belton explores the history of cinemas and discovers how it has changed over the years. Using multiple of secondary and primary sources he creates a comparison between the first cinema which was invented, and the cinema people are experiencing now. The key points he focus’ are: when cinemas were created the invention was considered to be an ‘invention without a future’ (Belton, 2014); an in depth study of l’appareil which relates to the reproducing and recording of the images and sound and defines how the cinemas to people of different employment which view the cinema differently and all view the cinema differently.

Belton, J (2014) emphasis the purpose of a cinema by relating it the l’appareil, the use of sound and visual which creates the experience for attendees. The exploration of film and research on how the cinema has changed over time all relates to conclusion in the text which is about the cinema being an experience which is created from sound and visual equipment used, whereas, a movie is anything that people watch at home on dvd or on online streaming services; this has also been impacted by the changing digital culture.

The information in the text is a result of multiple articles and books from other professionals, all which were created during the time period which John Belton has researched in the text. The information which has been sourced from the 1900s is considered to be reliable in the context of this text as it is the main time period which Belton is referring too in regard to the cinema. Belton has used seventy sources to write this text, which is a positive as it has allowed him to provide evidence to the statements made.
