We chose this picture because it represents the relationship between the characters the best way possible.

We chose certain artistic choices because this is what we understood they look like from the story.

To make the exact image we wanted we had to be very accurate and to write every little detail we wanted.

Padlet post: This image shows the moment Mrs. McCall calls Burge a "big rat," turning the tables on him. She doesn’t fight back with violence but with a smart trick, making him afraid. That shows how she takes control in her own way. The dark, shadowy style makes the scene feel even more real.

In my drawing, Burge McCall is shown yelling at his wife, while she stands silently and calmly. I created it because it shows the strong contrast between their personalities and how Mrs. McCall’s silence is more powerful than his loud anger.

The connection to the text is that Burge McCall was used to woman yelling back at him after he yelledx at them but not her not his wife ,she stayed quite all the time which scared him more than any anger would .

Artistic Choices:

I drew Burge with an open mouth and a angrey face to show how loud and aggressive he is. I drew Mrs. McCall standing straight with calm eyes to show her strength. I made her eyes big and focused—just like in the text, where her stare has power. The background is simple so the focus stays on the emotions between them.

How My Prompt Evolved:

At first, I thought about showing Burge sneaking around the house looking for poison. But after rereading the story, I felt the most powerful moment was when he yells and she stays calm. That’s when the power begins to shift. So I changed my idea to this .

The style I chose is cartoon characters because I know that in those years this style was very common in movies, and I think if this story were made into a movie it would look like this.

At first I tried to create the image in Canva but there is a block of certain content when the subject is violent or has the potential to be violent. So I created the image with a different program. I chose these parts of the story because I like dramatic changes and conflicts between characters. I think Mrs. McCall is a very smart and creative character and that she used these abilities to her personal advantage

“Hello, Burge. Your old woman was in here this morning and bought a pound of rat poison”.

In the image you can see Mrs. McCall buying a big jar of rat poison and Sled Sather , the cashier at the drug store behind her.

When I wrote the prompt for this image at first, the ai just drew her looking for the poison and one thing it even drew her a third hand.

After 2 - 3 times I managed to create the image I wanted I told the ai more specific things like “ a tall woman with black hair buying rat poison at the drug store, and a cashier selling it to her.

I chose this style of drawing because I think the story is very sad and dark and I thought it would be interesting to make a drawing that shows the story in a more joyful light.

I chose this theme because it's something I think is interesting but also sad to think about - you're supposed to trust the person you're in a relationship with. I could never live with someone I don't trust.

I chose a realistic style because, in addition to giving the image a slightly creepier atmosphere, it makes for a more solid and real creation, which is exactly what I was looking for.

The prompt I made definitely evolved and changed. It took the AI ​​a few tries to make Burge McCall look like a doll, and the costume was also challenging because I wasn't sure about it either.

In the image, the woman is holding rat poison behind the man’s back. She looks calm, but it’s clear she’s planning something. That’s just like Mrs. Mcall "at the time" — calm on the outside but in control.

At first, we wanted something more dramatic, but then we realized the quiet tension fits the story better, because of the suspensionthat was present and the absence of conversation between the characters.

The man looks worried, like Burge when he starts to suspect and to fear her. The woman, like Mrs. Mcall, doesn’t have to do much to scare him.

We chose the theme of “judgment based on appearance” because it’s a powerful and relevant message in today’s world. We often form opinions about people before we get to know them, and this image plays with that idea in a humorous yet meaningful way. It challenges us to look beyond the surface.

How the Image Represents the Theme:

If we were to connect this to a story like “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, we could compare it to how the character Mrs. Jones seems intimidating at first, but turns out to be deeply compassionate and caring. Like this character, our cartoon man might be hiding something more human behind his rough look.

Artistic Choices:

We asked for a “cartoon-style angry man” with strong, exaggerated features because we wanted the expression to be instantly readable and a little over-the-top. The suit and tie suggest that he’s a professional or in a position of power, which adds a layer of complexity, maybe he’s expected to act tough, even if he’s not. The color palette, strong reds and blues, amplifies the intensity of his mood and draws attention to his facial expression.

How the Prompt Evolved:

At first, we tried a more realistic version, but it didn’t emphasize the theme as clearly. We then shifted toward a stylized, cartoonish approach, which made the message more impactful and accessible. Each version helped me see how exaggeration can actually be more effective than realism when trying to communicate a theme.

The picture shows Burge McCall in one of his previous marriage, in which his wife would yell at him and call him names right back when he called her names, and misbehaved her. in his second marriage his wife knew more names than he did.

In contrast, his wife now, Mrs. McCall would just look at him, and never answered,

In my picture, Burge McCall sits at a dark bar. He looks angry but also a little scared. There is a bag of rat poison on the table, showing danger and fear. A man stands behind Burge, watching him, maybe judging him. The light from the window shines more on the man, not Burge. This shows that Burge’s power is fading, and he is not as strong as he looks.

I used this picture because it shows Burge trapped between his bad actions and the fear he feels now. I liked how the picture is dark and heavy, just like Burge’s feeling. I first thought of a picture where Burge looks angry, but I chose this one because it shows him confused and weak, which fits better.when he starts to understand that he might not have as much power as he thought.
