For those who don’t know, could you start off by telling us a little bit about your short story, “The death of the short story”?

In the beginning of the story the “story” dies. Everyone were watching Poetry, and no one noticed the warning signs. There was a public outcry, and it was the thing everyone talked about.

How did you approach the writing process this time around? Do you have a set routine or does it vary?

I had a writer's block before the story, and this short story made me overcome it. I wrote pretty much every day - sometimes 4 hours a day, and sometimes more. I didn't have a set routine - i just wrote when I wanted to.

What do you mean by "market whores"?

In today's world, money means more than actual talent. The publishers aren't looking for talent, but only looking for what can earn them the most money possibly. It's not real or authentic. That's something that i wanted to focus on in text.

What has been your inspiration for writing the text?

It came to me in the middle of the night. I had the weirdest dream about different genres - i was talking to them, and it was like they were alive. In some way i wanted to tell their story to the world. So my dream was my inspiration for my short story.

Why did the “Story” die in your text?

Stories have become less and less meaningful, and they don't portray anything important anymore - i wanted to talk about that, and I did that by killing “Story” in my short story. That's only why i talked about market whores - it's not about talent, or anything real. It's just about money.

- Anna og Jenny

What is your story about?

It’s about the death of the short story, as the title says. But then we have a lot of other characters. Well other genres. It’s basically a normal story but with characters as genres making human choices.

How did you get the idea?

I honestly don’t know. As an author I write down when I get an idea. Then when night I took a look at some of the ideas and I just thought of this.

What inspired you the most?

I actually wrote this as a start for a novel BUT suddenly I realised that the story would be better as short story. But it was still missing something. So I switched the characters from people to genres to make something different.

Is it something you got from your own life?

Actually, I got inspired from my grandfather passing away last year. He loved writing, he was also an author. He wrote really different and weird books. He usually wrote short stories therefor the short story dies.

What is the moral of the story?

The moral is even though death is all around us and grandparents die, you got to stay in school, kids. And don’t do drugs!

What is your favourite part in the story?

I cannot choose a part because the story works as a whole.

What is your favourite place to write?

I love to write near people. Like in café’s I like to look around and pretend I know their stories.

An interview with j. David Stevens

A week ago, I had the chance to interview j. David Stevens about he’s new short story “the death of the short story”

1.Why do you write? What was the purpose of the story?

I write because it is an opportunity to express myself in form of short stories. The purpose of the story is to learn people the difference between the different genre’s by giving them personality, so it is easier to learn the difference.

2.Do you think that fiction is better than the other genres?

Well it depends on how much fiction is in the fiction. In my opinion the best fiction is a fiction where most of the story seems like it could be reality, but you change some aspects of the story, so it becomes more like a imaginary world

3.Of all the books you have been writing, what it you favorite?

“The death of the short story” because it is very different from all the stories I have written until now. It is one of my more surreal stories.

4.What is your inspiration when writing a book?

A lot of my inspiration is, because I have a wild imagination. But some inspiration also comes from the modern-day world.

5.Why is the short story the main character of the story?

Because I like short stories a lot and I think it is very sad, that fewer and fewer people write them.

Sylvia og Patrick

Article about the story” the dead of the short story”

Hello everybody. We’ve just interviewed the author, J. David Stevens, who had been writing the story. It had been an interesting progress and we found some surprising things we didn’t knew about the story. “You talk about a lot of different characters; do they have a connection?” He said “Ya they all had a connection to the Story who died and were gathered at the funeral.”

“well, but why did they make up these lies about the demise?” He said “in the week that followed rumors began to circulate about the bunker near Obama. People didn’t believed that the story was gone like that. They thought that he had faked his death. And therefore, people make up some lies.

“Why did they need some of the DNA from the Story?” J. David said “A professor offered a thousand pounds to anyone who could produce a sample of the Story’s DNA for cloning.

“But what is the meaning of the whole story?” “A made this story to emphasize the genres but the rest is up to the individual”.

“Okay interesting J. David, thank you for the interview!”.
“You’re welcome. It was a pleasure”

Mathilde and Line

What do you mean by "market whores"?

Ah, yes. What I meant was that the publishers only ever do what is most popular in the market. Meaning that they won’t take any risk. Prose Poem who say that is giving the blame to the publisher because they didn’t help the situation.

Which lies did you make up when you were sitting around the fireplace?

I’m not sure what you mean by that. The lies that we told ourselves that the story was just hiding and that he really wasn’t gone. I wasn’t personally by a fireplace, it was John Lennon, Jesus and Ameillia Earhart.

Who is “Story”?

The Story is a representation on the genre of the short story. He died because the genre died.

Do you have a reason to write something like that?

Yes, of course. I think it is good to write something thought provoking as any today don’t take the risks accompanied with it. It is also representing how I see but it is up for interpretation for the reader.

Is it personally related to you?

Well, as an author I think it’s very personal to me. I like writing short stories but if nobody wants to publish my work, I can do little to none about it. It is always hard to figure out what works and what don’t. When you get more and more experienced you start to notice trends.

Are the different genres different personalities and persons?

Yes, I’d say so. The different genres all have different personalities and especially in this story it’s about how they handle grief and who they blame. They are different people too, of course. The characterization of genres is how a see them as people.

Thank you for answering my questions Christian Bom

No problem, it was very fun and I enjoyed it a lot.

And because it was fun to give genres life’s and souls.

4. Was is difficult to find out which genres to include in the text?

Yes and no… it was difficult to find the genres who died, but after that it all kind a make since, because to the funeral it was clear, that there is an eulogy. And all the others were random genres I personal like to read.

5. Where did the professor come from?

The professor come from Glasgow England.

6. What is your favorite place in the short story?

I personal love the ending of my story, because it is where you have to use your imagination and your creative brain starts to make pictures and images, and that is the best thing an author can do to the readers.

7. What is the meaning of the short story?

That is a difficult question… The meaning of the story is that you are going to use your imagination and your creative mind… you will get a bit of a story and the rest is you conception of, how the story died, and what all the others life´s will go on, and on that way the short story is a “never ending story”. That was the meaning of my short story

When a celebrity dies an uproar happens around Hollywood, people suddenly strive to give their utmost condolences to the deceased.

“Why did you personify the terms, in the short story?”

I personified the different genres to represent the characters that pops up every time a celebrity die.

“Why choose Short story as your main character?”

Because short stories are often read but are not the center of attention. When something suddenly happens to that person either a scandal or death, the spotlight lands on that person who was once under the radar of attention.

“Why did you choose to kill the Short story?”

To show how important a short story is, you read it all the time, but it gets no credit. And when something suddenly dies, you begin to appreciate the genre you once found insignificant.

“Why did you choose to make the death of the Short story negative in the public eye instead of positive?”

Because as I mentioned earlier, I wanted to cast some light on the fact that when someone you had listened to or read about and taken for granted and they suddenly die, you will be missing that person.
