In Paraguay, a community fights for the right to grow food

Carnival celebrations span over multiple days before Lent begins, and they are similar to the Mardi Gras festivities seen in the United States and other countries. Paraguayans hold parades and pageants filled with music and dancing well into the night.

Día de San Blas:

Held in February, this day of celebration is in honor of Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Paraguay. Ciudad del Este hosts the most elaborate festivities for this important day, though it is celebrated throughout the country. Be prepared for plenty of food, music and fun.

The Guaranía was created by the Paraguayan musician José Asunción Flores, in January 1925, after experiencing different arrangements with the old Paraguayan musical theme "Ma'erãpa reikuaase". Paraguay also has classical music and popular music consisting of rock and jazz music. The folk music uses a range of different instruments some of which include the Spanish guitar and the European harp.

• Description: The Gran Chaco is one of the largest plains in South America. It has dense forests, dry grasslands, wetlands, and salt lakes. The weather here is hot and dry, but you can see many animals like tapirs and jaguars.

Southern Blue Circle: Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue

• Getting There: Take a bus from Encarnación. It’s easy and not too expensive.

• Cost: Tickets are about 25,000 PYG and last for three days.

• Hours: Open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Summer hours are longer.

• What to Bring: Wear comfy shoes, bring sunscreen, a hat, and water.

Saltos del Monday

• Getting There: Take a bus or taxi from Ciudad del Este. It’s a short ride.

• Cost: Tickets are cheap, just a few thousand PYG.

• Safety: Be careful near the waterfall and stay on the paths.

Gran Chaco

• Getting There: Rent a car or join a tour. It’s a long drive from Asunción.
