The Canadians had to keep the mother country safe. This is one extended battle that just kept on going from Sep 3, 1939 – May 8, 1945 which is the whole war. In total the Canadians sunk 29 U-Boats plus they sank three Italian submarines.

It was also so the Allies could test new equipment and tactics so they could plan an amphibious attack in 1944 that would end the war. This Raid was a failure. The eastern flank had to climb over a cliff covered in barb wire and they also encountered a German convoy of ships on the way to the beach landing. The troops landed in Sicily and took control rather easily. Taking control of the mainland however, was an extremely grueling task. The Nazis were not going to let the mainland get invaded and they had it heavily protected with mines, barb wire and machine gun nests in the mountainous landscape. Nazis were attacking and bombing the major cities in Britain.
