There are also the two prisoners being crucified on this side of this picture. They are being hung with ropes instead of being nailed to the cross like Jesus. There is also a light around Jesus' head with a sign about his head that read, "INRI" which means "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" showing he was important. The artist also has the background of this picture dark at the top and lighter at the bottom. Potentially showing the darkness coming after Jesus' death as Jesus is dead in this picture.

I think the artist wanted us to focus on Jesus and not the prisoners. Which is why they would put them on the side of the picture showing they were there. The artist also wanted to show how Jesus was loved by many. Having included his mother and followers to be by his side after his death. The artist wanted us to focus on the impact Jesus' death had on us and others.

I believe the theological reason for the death of Jesus was ransom for many. I believe this as Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Roman guards are in the back watching and it looks like some kind of roman official is standing over Jesus. In the background you could see that it seems that somebody is either getting  put up or getting taken down from a cross in the background. The sky also seems to be cloudy and murky. 

The artist chose to make the picture black and white to add a layer of grimness to the already tragic picture. The artists main focus is Jesus, the prisoner, Mary, and the Roman official. The artist wanted you to think about how harsh crucifixion actually is and how sad and grim the day of Jesus death was. 

 The theological reason for the death of Jesus in this picture is The Suffering Servant. A reason for this could be because Jesus is getting nailed to the Cross, one of the most painfull parts of being crucified. Also, quotes from my notes state, "He was pierced for our transgressions. Jesus' arms are spread out, making it look like he is reaching for a hug from us. Mary and John are right next to him praying for him. The sun is setting and there is one skull and rocks surrounded by them. There is a light glowing around all three of there heads. This could represent all of there holiness. 

The artist did this so he could show how Mary and John were there to support Jesus after he was crucified. This artist wants us to think about how Jesus told John to support Mary after he died and he is exactly doing that in this picture. With the halos around there heads the artist wants us to know the holiness of this picture. Also, the artist is showing John was there for Mary to support her. 

The theological reason would be Jesus being a ransom for many. The picture shows Jesus dead and Jesus died for our sins. He did this so us people could receive eternal life in heaven. Jesus was the ransom for us. Him dying on the cross was the trade for us being saved from sins. Also, Jesus is alone. His eyes are closed and his head is down so I infer that he is already dead. There is blood dripping from his feet and on other parts of his body. I can also see the clothing he is wearing is red. One last thing I noticed in this picture was right above Jesus is a tiny halo. This halo signifies  I think the artist made Jesus' clothing red because I think this is to signify death, all the blood Jesus shed throughout his crucifixion, and all the physical pain he went through, and spiritual pain. I think the halo is there to show how that Jesus is our savior and that he is the main focus. I think the artist wanted us to see that Jesus should be the main focus and to see that he suffered a lot, alone and in darkness. The theological reason for this picture is the suffering servant because Jesus suffered alone and no one was there by his side. He also suffered for our benefit. I see that the background is mostly dark and that the only light shown in the picture is landing on Jesus. Jesus looks like he could still be alive because he is looking up towards where the light would be coming from. 

I think the artist chose the lighting to show that Jesus is the light shining through all the darkness. I think the artist may want to show that through Jesus looking up that he might be praying or directly talking to God. I think the reason the artist didn't include anyone else in the picture or anything else at all is to really just focus on Jesus and his pain and suffering.

I think of the 3 theological reasons for the death of Jesus, the reason of Jesus being the suffering servant fits best. In this picture Jesus' facial expression really shows us the suffering and pain he went through during his death. This picture shows that Jesus is suffering so he can bring that light to us that was shown in the picture. While looking at the picture, I see Jesus nailed to the cross with blood dripping down his body. The fresh blood implies that he was recently crucified. His head is sagging down, a sign that he has given up on trying to get air in his lungs out of exhaustion. He is wearing nothing but a thin piece of cloth around his waist and a crown of thorns, adding to the bleeding. The scenery around him shows its daytime-noon with an implied breeze based on hair and cloth flowing in the wind. The sky is blue with a gold light peeking out of the clouds. Behind him seems to be buildings of civilization, while there is a crowd across from the mountain he’s on. The 2 people surrounding him seem to be Mary and John. I say this because of Mary's veil and John's long hair. Mary seems distressed seeing her son in such pain, while John seems sympathetic and intrigued, looking up at Jesus. 

2. I think the artist painted this image to portray the different reactions to Jesus’ death. While one reaction is despair, the other is fascination. John looks up at Jesus, almost knowing he will come back. Mary seems too distraught by the scene to focus on his ascension. In the sky of the image we also see light peering in through the clouds, hinting at God's presence. The artist showed these elements to focus on the welcoming to Heaven for him in the sky, showing that it has opened for us. The artist wants us to think about the suffering Jesus endured for this to happen. 

3. I think the theological image of Jesus shown through this painting is the Suffering Servant. In the picture we are shown the hurt and pain Jesus is willing to endure for us. The reason he withstands the pain is for behalf of humanity to allow us into Heaven, symbolized by the light in the clouds.

In the image, there are many people surrounding Jesus, and as the suffering servant Jesus died for the good of humanity. I see darkness all over except one beam of light on Jesus. There are two other people crucified on both sides of Jesus, and there are a lot of people in the crowd. There are guards on horses and in the crowd. Jesus is looking towards one of the criminals next to him, and is almost dead.
2. I think the artist shines a beam of light on Jesus to express not only Jesus' divinity but his conquering over sin and death by opening heaven. The guards and their horses look frightened, and I think the artist did this to show the guards reaction to realizing that Jesus really was the messiah. The artist drew Jesus nailed to the cross and the other two tied to the cross to show the suffering Jesus endured in order to defeat sin and death.
