I teach 10th grade E.L.A. and 12th grade C.T.E. in a class that blends English, public health, and medical ethics. My action plan will create a yearlong framework with loose unit goals revolving around the ideas of productive rebellion,  genre not as form but as action, and students need to become the media.

I typically work with around 100 students per year. At our school, students engage in STEAM Fridays where they work collaboratively to tackle problems facing our community. We also place a heavy emphasis on incorporating STEAM and interdisciplinary learning paths in our everyday curriculum.
Last year, I taught the novels Endangered by Eliot Schrefer and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This coming year, my department is hoping to steer towards teaching excerpts rather than the whole novel, and we want to tie in some new texts. We are considering The Hunger Games, Feed, and The Marrow Thieves.
For my action plan, I am hoping to (continue to) design a year-long PBL that ties these works of speculative fiction together and shows students how literature acts as a mirror to the world and encourages change.

OEB Magnet is a STEAM and Spanish Dual Language middle school in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. For the last 100 years, students have been able to see mountains change throughout the seasons on the north side of the school and distant views of the Pacific Ocean on the south side. We recently named our school after just one of our legendary alumni, and I am hoping to incorporate some of what I learn in this institute to help support students as they create science fiction pieces for our annual Octavia E. Butler Library Science Fiction Contest. I hope to help students be inspired by the ways that science fiction can speak to collective issues and potential solutions. I also support cross-curricular project-based learning, and will be working with the 8th grade team to develop a climate change project this fall.

We serve a diverse population and have a Newcomer program with over 200 students who are recent immigrants to the US. As a Teacher Librarian, I am interested in creating resources for my colleagues to use in their own curriculum. I also teach a 7th grade Accelerated Literacy class and am revising one of our units to center a Cli-Fi text (probably Feed).

I teach junior/ senior writing seminar (college prep research papers) and 9th-12th humanities and songwriting/ music project classes.  I hope to build a through line of climate futurism in my humanities classes as my action plan, layering in many ideas and texts from the Human / Nature institute. Specifically, I will be co-teaching a class called Future Farm Fables in September (reading Aesop's fables as well as local Indigenous etiologies, histories, and stories, plus investigating natural histories and projected climate crisis effects in Iowa-- before creating our own future farm fables). FHMS serves 227 students in grades 7-12. The student body is 32.2% economically disadvantaged.

I teach 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts as well as 7th grade Literacy and Drama. With my action plan, I hope to empower rural students to become changemakers and shape their own stories.
